Robbie Etterson's brilliant hip-hop site UNKUT was definitely one of the reasons I wanted to get into this blog game, and it still remains one of my favorite sites. A few years ago Robbie got together a gang of dope underground rappers and producers and released the Unkut mixtape "Counterstrike". But now, on the 10 year anniversary of the sites incarnation, Robbie definitely steps it up with "Counterstrike 2: A Decade Of UNKUT", featuring 20 tracks with exclusive material from a lot of my favorite artists and producers. Some of the most interesting is the first Real Live material in years (K-Def and Larry-O for those not in the know), an Amed produced Milano banger, Grand Daddy I.U., Omniscience, Beneficence, $amhill, Craig G/Agallah and several others. This is a definite must hear if you love underground hip-hop, in the true school end of things, and is available for free download and CD and possible tape editions will pop up as well.

Slice-Of-Spice and master producer K-DEF is teaming up for another round of hot plates, this time focusing on the '90s work with emcee Larry-O under the name Real Live. These sessions produced hard rhyming over some of my favorite K-Def beats on "The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama" (1996) which has since gone out of print. A couple of days back we got a taste with the previously unreleased joint "Keep It Movin'" as well as news/sampler/artwork for the release of the complete instrumentals of aforementioned album on a 2xLP set. Now the label up the ante with news on another Real Live related project to be released simultaneously. Titled "Lost Beats" the Extended Play 12" consists of previously unreleased 'Def instrumentals created for Larry-O and the Real Live album - all mastered from the original DAT tapes by the producer himself. Check out the free download "Been There, Done That" as well as the full sampler below, and head over to the Real Live section @ Slice-Of-Spice to purchase the different projects.
Wow, this is such a treat right here! I'm a huge fan of Real Live's (K-Def / Larry-O) 1996 album "The Turnaround: A Long Awaited Drama", and hearing previously unreleased music from those sessions is a true blessing. Once again it's the amazing guys at Slice-Of-Spice that comes to the rescue who has unearthed this soothing gem called "Keep On Movin'" which could definitely have found it's place on the LP. As if this wasn't enough they are releasing a 2xLP set featuring the entire instrumental "The Turnaround", while "Keep On Movin'" will be placed on a limited picture disc 10" vinyl. The 2xLP is set for an October 25 release date; read more, listen to the snippets and pre-order the set here. I would love to see the original vocal version get an official re-release and remaster treament as well, as it's a real shame that such a terrific album has been out of print for so long.
