The Roots Picnic 2011 w. NaS

Starting 2008, Okayplayer and The Roots have put together an annual outdoors mini festival in Philly every summer. Not only do ?uestlove, Black Thought, Kamal and the guys provide live music themeselves but there's also concerts from hip-hop and soul artists of the younger generation as well as suprise guests. The annual Roots Picnic took place on the 4th of June this year and featured Nas, Whiz Kalifa, Esperanza Spalding, Yelawolf and others.

The Roots are of course one of the greatest live acts in all of music right now so it's always much fun listening to their sets (I haven't had the chance to see them perform live myself yet), and if you don't have a copy of "The Roots...Come Alive!" you really missed out on a great live album. Luckily I became aware of a great sounding recording of the group's entire set this year through Brandon from the ill Collectors Item site. The rip is however provided by this amazing place called All The Way Live which records and uploads tons of great live shows, most are audio but some are video downloads too. I strongly recommend visiting that site, I haven't had the chance to listen to more than this one but the sound quality of The Roots's show are incredible; much better than many official label recordings.

The Roots set featured a very welcome apperance by none other than NaS who in the middle teared away live instruments renditions of classics like "Get Down", "The World is Yours" and "Nas is Like". Another highlight of the show is Black Thought doing a perfect live take on G Rap's classic "Men At Work", such a fucking beast he is that Tariq! So enjoy the show and head over to All The Way Live for more goodies like this - all props and thanks to them!
