[Documentary] ICE CUBE - "The Making of 'AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" (Part 1)

First and foremost, sorry for the huge lack of updates on The Lost Tapes the last two weeks or so but I've been super busy, plus lost both my computer, phone and my internet but don't give up hope on this much loved blog. While I haven't been updating the blog I've been heavily listening to a lot of classic hip hop that I haven't heard in years, especially the classic West Coast stuff like N.W.A.'s "efil4zaggiN", Ice Cube's 1990-1994 discography, the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg albums, and so on. I got to say that "Niggaz 4 Life" is to me by far superior to "Straight Outta Compton" is pretty much just as good as "The Chronic", well at least almost, Ice Cube's solo debut that was made around the same was different but just as good with The Bomb Squad and Sir Jinx going in over the production hardcore while Ice Cube proved he could definitely hold down his one man show. It's a true classic hip-hop album and I'm a real sucker for documenatires about the making of these '90s masterpieces, so when I found that a real documentary on the making of the LP is just about finished you can bet I am hyped. It will be made available for free in segments via YouTube channel IceCube/CubeVision, and you can watch the first segment right now up top while the next. Watch out for the next installment coming soon!

[Documentary] PUBLIC ENEMY - "Prophets Of Rage"

Although it might not offer that much new information for the hardcore fan, I found the BBC produced TV documentary "Prophets of Rage" to be quite an interesting look into the life and times of the band that in no small part helped redefine hip-hop music. The majority of the hour is spent discussing the years around the masterpiece trilogy that is "Yo! Bumrush the Show", "It Takes A Nation of Millions..." and "Fear of a Black Planet" though it does cover things like Flava Flav's foray into reality TV (very interesting to see Griff, Chuck and Flav separately discuss this). Interviews with Flava Flav, Chuck D, Griff, the Shocklee brothers, Bill Stephney, DJ Lord, and a host of other people important to the legacy of Public Enemy makes this a well worth watch. I would also like to recommend writer Cristopher R. Weingarten's musings on "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back", for me the best volume in the often excellent 33 1/3rd book series. Many thanks goes out to 808SHIRTS for the upload to YouTube of the documentary.

DE LA SOUL Ft. CHUCK D - "The People"

De La Soul is such an incredible group; the trio has constantly been churning out quality music of the highest degree since 1989, have moved with the times and has managed to stay relevant while staying true to their roots - a true feat for sure. The latest single from the Strong Island trio is a beautiful joint with a lot of funk influence and a progressive beat that really brings out the beat and wittiest of the producing emcees. As if that wasn't enough they have invited another true hip-hop legend in the form of the immortal Chuck D which really brings his A-game here.

Though the Soul has mostly released side projects, albeit good ones, such as the "Nike: Are You Runnin''" project and the concept album Pos and Dave released in 2012. But with singles like the unbelivable Wu-Tang homage "Get Away", the J Dilla mixtape ("Smell The D.A.I.S.Y.") and the announcement of another free EP produced by Pete Rock and DJ Premier to be followed by an official full-length album next year promises some extremely good things. I'm not sure which of these projects will appear on, but I believe it will be from the forthcoming album as it doesn't sond like a Preem or Soul Brother production. Either way its another strong offering from the gang so be sure to pump, pump it up and visit WeAreDeLaSoul.com to read more about the song and download the track gfor free.

[Video] PE 2.0. - "People Get Ready"

Following on the success of the smashing soul banger "Give We Pride" by Chuck D and Mavis Staples, Chuck D and new partner Jahdi once again enlists the solid production talents of Divided Souls Entertainment and DJ Pain 1 (who also contributed two banging tracks on the last two Public Enemy albums). The single called "People Get Ready" features close to a vintage Public Enemy sound, of course updated for the times, with both emcees getting busy. The song is released as PE 2.0, which seems to be an offshot of Public Enemy featuring Chuck and Jahdi though I'm not entirely sure at this moment. However be sure to stay tuned for more info and forthcoming music!

[Video] EDO G Ft. CHUCK D - "Fight"

I haven't heard Edo G's new album "After All These Years" in its entirety yet, but from what I heard the Boston legend and one of the most underrated definitely came correct in '14 with a solid album. One of the most important and illest track on the project from what I've heard so far is the first single, the Chuck D assisted "Fight". Getting it on over a powerful soul influenced yet raw hip-hop banger, Edo and the legendary Public Enemy front man goes hard on both their lyrics and their deliveries, creating a certified banger to say the least. It must have been an obvious choice for a music video which you can see above, so TURN IT UP and enjoy this great ass joint. I suggest you pick up the album which features no less than three Pete Rock bangers, plus production from Vanderslicec (who's responsible for this), 9th Wonder, Marco Polo and more. You can grab both the 2xLP set, cassette and the CD @ UGHH now so HURRY UP AND BUY!

[Out Of Print] TERMINATOR X - & The "Valley Of The Jeep Beats"

You know I don't fuck with those blogs and websites that straight up steal from hard working artists by leaking their albums and making them available for free download. Mark my words that you will never see The Lost Tapes turn into one of that type of bullshit site; however every once in a while I like to do an "Out-Of-Print" article where I put the spotlight on an older album that is both out-of-print and never quite have gotten the credit it deserves. So with that little disclaimer now out of the way let us get down to business...

You could ask almost any hip-hop head about what made Public Enemy so special and most likely get answers involving either the commanding voice and lyrics of Chuck D or the explosive production style of The Bomb Squad. A few might even mention the innovative and often hilarious but always funky fresh antics of Flava Flav, but I can almost guarantee you that not once are you likely to hear the name Terminator X being mentioned. What made Public Enemy the perfect group was that they all complimented eachother to a degree few rap groups have done since or before, making every member as integral as the next. The presence of Terminator X's fists of fury and razor sharp preciseness on the wheels of steel loomed over everything the crew created at their highly charged peak - his beautifully violent scratch sessions we're all over "Yo! Bumrush The Show", (1987) "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back", (1988) "Fear Of A Black Planet", (1990) "Apocalypse '91" (1991) and "Muse-Sick-n-Hour Mess Age" (1994). What's so beautiful about Public Enemy as a group was that each member possessed a totally unique style that meshed so well with the group sound - it was almost like they were born to make the music they did and the albums they did. If you listen closely you'll realize that Chuck D rhymes as naturally and organic as the beats concocted by the Shocklee brothers and Eric Sadler, while Flav's unpredictability and hype antics is a much needed counterpoint to both Chuck's afro-centric lyrics and baritone voice and the bombastic production. At the same time. The last piece of the puzzle is Terminator X who uses two records, turntables and a crossfader to cut shit up in exactly the same "wall of noise" manneristics as The Bomb Squad creates NOISE. There are few hip-hop groups that at leas doesn't have one weak link that gets constantly overshadowed by the rest. The original line-up of Public Enemy, just like e.g. the classic John Coltrane Quartet, always worked extremely well because they relied on each other and grew together. That is one of the main reasons they managed to create some of the best hip-hop records of all time and are still to this day the epitome of the perfect hip-hop group. The group mentality also shun through on the first solo albums by Chuck D and Terminator X' which, aside from being very underrated, both sounnd very much like left overs from P.E. sessions  in many respects

Between "Fear Of A Black Planet" and "Apocalypse '91", Rogers started working on a solo venture of his own under his Terminator X moniker. Though he was never credited as a producer on any of the Enemy projects it's not hatd to tell that he's been a student of The Bomb Squad and their bombastic, sample heavy cluster productions when preparing his own work. The monstrous blast of pumping drums, kicking snares and chunky bass lines making way for a thick collage of sampled grooves (the infamous Wall Of Noise) fills the speakers from the opening "Vendetta... The Big Getback" and continues throughout the set with various suceeding results. Sometimes it works great and sometimes less so, but there's no mistaking which crew this guy is part of when listening. But although it sounds like an Enemy record in spirit, it never reaches the heights one has come to expect from those albums; neither are there any standouts a long the lines of "Rebel Without A Pause", "Fight The Power" or "Party For Your Right To Fight". Those records may have been done 25 years ago but they don't feel the least dated today, they are simply timelesss. "Terminator X in The Valley Of Jeep Beats" on the other hand feels very rooted in 1991, the year it was made. That doesn't at all mean that it's a bad album; on the contrary it is actually a pretty dope listen but it's not no classic either. There's some slamming beats here that'll have your head nodding in agreement, X's scratches are not only juicy but he takes every chance he can to let his turntable fury loose which is the constant highlight of the album, and on "Buck Whylin'" Chuck D shares vocal duties with Sistah Souljah over a powerful breakbeat that might very well be the best cut on the LP. Most of the other guests are relative unknowns which stands as its biggest achilles heel. With some real strong guest apperances and a couple of tracks co-produced by The Bomb Squad or other beat maestros of the time this could've been one hell of an album. As it stands now it's a solid release by one of the greatest hip-hop DJ:s of all time and is a well worth listen both for initiated P.E. fans and newcomers. And although I can't help but drool a little at the idea of a full album of songs in the vein of "Terminator X at the edge of Panic" I can't deny that the talented DJ did in fact release a worthwhile album in 1991 that should be in any Public Enemey heads collection... So if you haven't heard it yet be sure to check it out below and if you ever come across a vinyl copy in the dollar bin (which I've seen several times), don't hesitate to pick it up.. PUBLIC ENEMY NO. #1!

TERMINATOR X - "& THE VALLEY OF THE  JEEP BEATS"

EDO G preps "After All These Years" through Kickstarter

Pretty much any true hip-hop head absolutely love the ruff voice, sharp lyrics and social and personal commentary of Edo G, but unfortunately that love has never really transformed into record sales. With ten retail albums behind, the Boston emcee now turns to Kickstarter to let help fans bring his upcoming "After All These Years" to life. "I've been working on this new album for the last year, and it's brought me back to that original Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs conscious boom bap rap ... It's time to go back to the very beginning, to the essence of what hip-hop is", Edo says in the video embeded above before going into how he found four of '90s Pete Rock beat that he never got around to using that'll be included here (!). Sounds like a crazy project no doubt, especially as The LP will feature production from 9th Wonder, Xplicit One, and Pete Rock as already mentioned while Guilty Simpson, Chuck D and Camp Lo all are slated for vocal apperances. If the album (which will be pressed up on a very limited 2xLP set) isn't enough you'll also receive a cassette of "My Own Worst Enemey" and an iLL book documenting the writing process of 10 of Edo's personal favorite tracks. How iLL is that?

The label is 5th & UNION, an imprint formed by Edo together with Jamieson Grillo. It's a Kickstarter project though, which means that the release of it is based on fan demand. The goal for the label is to gather $12,500 which of $9,276 is already in the can. Please show your support for this, even if it's just $10 dollars because we need to see this happen. I know I will donate and I really don't have the money for it but by doing this you cut out the middle hand - no money to shady A&R:s and non-musical bitches, just simply  cash to create, complete and distribute an album - 'nuff said... Also check out the snippet of the Chuck D track below, sounding serious!

[Mixtape] DJ SEANSKI's "A Tribute to PUBLIC ENEMY"

DJ Seanski, best known for his involvement on the second volume of Guru's Jazzmatazz series, kicks off the new year with a tribute to a group who's masterful catalouge is always a great listen, although you should have most, if not all of these, in your record collection if you're old enough. "A Tribute to Public Enemy" features Seanski taking over the turntables for a one hour mix, spinning nothing but classic Public Enemy like "Bring The Noise", "Fight The Power" and "Resurrection", while adding some of the original samples incorporated into the production by the Shocklee brothers, Sadler and Chuck D... The mighty Bomb Squad of course. Unfortunately, the picture of the tracklist is so small it's impossible to see and I haven't listened yet (only read Seanski's press message). Enjoy, TURN IT UP and let that wall of NOISE blow you away again. Of course, this works great as an introduction to younger heards not yet too familiar with one of the greatest group's of all time.

PUBLIC ENEMY - "The Evil Empire of Everything"

Only a few months ago, Long Island veteran crew Public Enemy released their eleventh studio album "Most Of My Heroes Still Don't Appear On No Stamp" exclusively to iTunes. Already by the time of that LP:s conception, the plan was to follow it up with another full-length project called "The Evil Empire of Everything", that connects with each other on some planes although they are meant to be viewed separate entities. "They're totally separate albums," Chuck D told Rolling Stone. "But 25 years ago, it probably would have been called a double album. And maybe 25 years ago, it would have been called an extended A-side or extended B-side. But now, in today's digital space, we thought it's very important to be able to slow the listener down. The fact that you work on something, and a reviewer or a listener listens to it on their iPod or their file in about 15 or 20 seconds, it's like, 'Wait a minute. Slow down.'" (Chuck D on P.E.'s two new albums, Rolling Stone, 2012).

"The Evil Empire of Everything" was just released today, and is another iTunes exclusive which boosts features from Ziggy Marley, Tom Morello & Henry Rollins (!), Davy DMX and a few others. Luckily for us few weird fucks that still likes to have our music on vinyl, cassette or CD, Chuck D and the gang will satisfy our needs by releasing both "The Evil Empire" and "Most of My Heroes" on compact disc on November 6. Shouts to Kemal for the information; PE really need to step up their promotion game a few notches!

Public Enemy x Cormega x Large Pro - "Catch The Thrown"

Just finished a front-to-back listen of my digital copy of Public Enemy's latest full-length, "Most Of My Heroes Still Don't Appear On No Stamp". I admit to have been sleeping on PE's last few albums, but this is actually very good, so do yourself a favor and cop it @ iTunes. Made up of only eleven songs, it's a tight album with little room for filler and Chuck D sounding as charged as he's done anytime in the last 10 years. I might drop a full review for this in time, but for now I will only say that it is highly recommended.

I was a little dissapointed that a legendary crew like P.E. decided to release their LP exclusively as a digital project, so I was pleased to learn that Chuck D has announced via Twitter that it will be available on both CD and vinyl on October 1st. Since the promotion overall has been seriously lacking, I don't think it will be no harm to throw you another freebie from the joint, especially as "Catch the Thrown" is already up on YouTube. The track is one of my early favorites, and besides impeccable performances from Mistachuck, it also features Cormega who's style and lyrics here brilliantly taps into the Public Enemy zone. I think it's safe to say that Large Professor is the producer of this cut, as he's a credited performer but does not add any vocals to the song.

Bumpy & Preem Prequel EP coming

As we all know by now the long-awaited full-length album by legendary veteran Bumpy Knuckles, "The Kolexxxion", fully produced by DJ Premier is being released on March 27. As it's already available for pre-orders on both CD and vinyl from several sites I'm counting on it actually being released by then (unlike that NYGz album - what's up Preem?). Matter of fact, I pre-ordered my copy yesterday; I've heard 10 of the 17 songs from the album and I'm already now certain enough to say that this will be Freddie Foxxx's best LP since his masterpiece "Industry Shakedown" over a decade ago. Before the actual collection drops, however, the duo are giving fans a five-track EP of songs that didn't make the final cut called "StoodioTyme" (click to listen to a short snippet reel). The digital release will be available for a cheap price on March 5 via the regular sites sites like iTunes and Amazon. Below you can also take a listen to Flava Flav featured single "Shake the Room" from the LP, now in CDQ. Thx to Gim and his fine work at DJPB.

01. "StOoDiOtYmE"
02. "Fake"
03. "That Preemo Shit"
04. "tAkEiT2tHeToP"
05. "Inspired By Fire"

Full PUBLIC ENEMY concert

One of hip-hop's most incredible groups of all time rocked a two hour set at New Jersey's ATP Festival this past Sunday. The great NPR (National Public Radio) just made the entire concert available for our listening pleasure; available in both streaming and downloadable format. While I'm dissapointe to say that I have yet to see them perform myself, recordings like this makes it evident that even 25 years after their debut, the passion and energy are still in full effect.

Although the day of the performance marked the 20 year anniversary of "Apocalypse '91... The Enemy Strikes Back", the material of the set almost exclusively comes from their classic third LP, the masterpiece "Fear Of A Black Planet". It does feature some additional classic records like "Bring The Noise", "Show 'Em Whatcha Got" too though. The Enemy sound are here heard in a somewhat updated context featuring a perfect mixture of live instruments and the man behind the wheels of steel. Even if you haven't been too big on P.E.'s latest material, this is a must listen for anyone who ever enjoyed these guys. A bunch of thanks and credit to War & Peace for spreading the word on this gem!

Illus - "Feel Good" [The Johnny Juice Remixes]

This is some pretty cool shit for both fans of Illus and old Public Enemy heads who might remember Johnny Juice who supplemented for/with Terminator X and is sometimes listed as an original Bomb Squad founder. Just listening to the track above I'm really feeling the smooth soulful sound of the beat that blends perfectly with the reminiscing theme of Illus lyrics. The major cuts is a big plus too; it's especially Johnny Juice's involvement that made me curious to check out the full 7-track remix EP found below but the rhyming is on point. Here's a little piece of info supplied by the artist in companion to the download:

“As a special thank you to everyone that has been supporting my projects recently I am proud to offer you the FEEL GOOD Remixes album, produced entirely by the legendary DJ Johnny Juice from Public Enemy and original Bomb Squad founder. Chuck D called the original Feel Good Music "one of the best albums of the year" and with DJ Johnny Juice on the beats remixing, we have created an entirely new sound that builds on the original's passion, heart and soul.”

01. "Ready" (Remix)
02. "Beautiful Day" (Remix)
03. "Old Friends" (Remix)
04. "Have Fun Will Travel" (Remix)
05. "Happy Little Accident" (Remix)

Chuck D - "Notice, Know This"

As a response to the release of Jay-Z/Kanye West's video to the "Otis" Redding sampling lead single off their collaborative LP, living legend Chuck D dropped some choice words in a new video called "Notice, Know This". Fed up with the lack of substance in the hip-hop game, Chuck takes the microphone to reflect on the state of the music as well as touching on some of the injustices we see today. The Public Enemy front man still speaks with authority as his flow and voice commands you to listen to his words. The only problem I have with this track is that I wish he would've made it into a full song. Rocking the same sample of Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" as "The Throne" duo, the track is also honoring the late, great musician:

"This is a polite respect call to the troops, to continue to inspire but reflect the people better. Otis Redding was a humble country man from Macon, Georgia who bought a jet to work in, not to flash! He perished in that plane.
Here's to hoping that the J & K super-group can elevate the masses and try a little bit more to reflect Otis heart rather than swag, because they're to good to be less."

The one and only BOMB SQUAD

The Bomb Squad was of course the sonic geniuses behind Public Enemey's three first classic and groundbreaking albums, "Yo! Bumrush The Show" (1987), "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" (1988) and "Fear Of A Black Planet" (1990). The crews sound was something out of the ordinary, layer on layer on layer of samples to create music full of NOISE; as Chuck D said, if Phil Spector invented the wall of sound then Hank Schocklee's style was the wall of noise - and he definitely had a very valid point.

The Bomb Squad consisted mainly of Hank and Keith Schocklee, Eric "Vietnam" Sadler and Chuck D himself (at least for the P.E. records). Later on producers Gary "G-Wiz" and Kerwin Sleek Young was added to the production team but for this compilation I wanted to focus on their older material, the real Bomb Squad sound with the Shocklee brothers and Eric "Vietnam" Sadler. So the music on here are almost exclusively from 1988 to 1993 and is filled to the limits with 19 tracks, and almost 80 minutes of dope golden era hip-hop. I don't know what the hell happened to The Bomb Squad, between those years I mentioned they were really big and everybody loved their sound but from 1995 and onwards it's like they stopped music, with a very few exceptions such as a small number of remixes.

While they were active they produced a gang of albums in full; the three Public Enemey's album mentioned above, Ice Cube's "Amerikkka's Most Wanted", Young Black Teenagers '91 LP and "Bazerk, Bazerk, Bazerk" by Sonz Of Bazerk & No Self Control. I didn't want to include anything from those albums obviously, but I think this is a good representation of The Bomb Squad's non album tracks, remixes, soundtrack joints and what not. The only thing I wanted on there that I didn't have room for was a track from Slick Rick's debut but you should have heard that anyways. Oh well, TURN IT UP!!!!!!

01. Public Enemey - "Intro (The 13th Message)" / "Livin' In A Zoo"
02. 3rd Bass - "Steppin' to the A.M."
03. Doug E. Fresh - "On The Strength" [Bomb Squad Remix]
04. Aaron Hall - "Don't Be Afraid" [125th Gangster Posse Remix]
05. Eric B. & Rakim - "Juice (Know The Ledge)" (Soundtrack Version)
06. Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison [Bomb Squad Remix]"
07. The 7A3 - "Coolin' In Cali"
08. Big Daddy Kane - "Nuff Respect"
09. LL Cool J - "It Gets No Rougher"
10. Leaders Of The New School - "Trains, Planes & Automobiles"
11. Silver Bullet - "20 Seconds to Comply" [Bomb Squad Remix]
