[Album] SADAT X x DIAMOND D - "Sum Of Man"

Now I know damn well that three weeks is a lifetime on the world wide web but considering I haven't been posting for The Lost Tapes at all I never got around to post about Sadat X's latest album when it dropped. You don't have to worry that I'm going to backtrack and post all sorts of stuff that dropped in that interim but this one is special to me. Called "Sum Of Man" Sadat X teased about it quite some time ago, saying his next album would be entirely produced by super producer Diamond D. Truly a man of his word, the two has been hitting the studio hard to create a solid twelve joints that's nothing short of certified Hip Hop. The Brand Nubian emcee and the D.I.T.C. production maestro has been working together for a large chunk of their respective career, ever since Diamond laced the classic Nubian single "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down" (in three equally sick versions) and X and Lord Jamar returned the favor by appearing on "Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop". 

Just like he did with Southern hardcore spitter BIGREC a while back the sound and atmosphere is perfectly catered to Sadat X smooth style, intelligent lyrics and unmistakable voice, at the same time as it's unquestionably carries signature of Diamond D. The record is all about these two, a celebration of their 25 year long musical relationship, but guests turn up in extended family like Jawz Of Life (seen and heard on the first single, above) Kurupt and Tha Liks, former Terror Squad crooner Tony Sunshine and the always impressive Raheem Devaughn. I've only heard the singles so far but I'll definitely be listening to the entire LP later today. The release of this album hasn't exactly been big news so hopefully this post might shine a light on the project for some other heads who's been sleeping. [Album] SADAT X - "Agua"

When the world first heard The Brand Nubians 1990 debut album "One For All", notorious for being praised with the much hyped five mics rating in The Source, few would think that Derreck X would be the artist out of that trio to have the highest profile and largest catalouge in a few years. In fact "One For All" treated Lord Jamar and Derreck X as Grand Puba's back up band, and didn't even appear on half of the album. But sometimes the tables turn, through hard work and dedication Sadat X (as he soon after changed his name to) crafted a unique style with an unmistakable voice with lyrics that often dealt with personal feelings and surviving in a world where friends and lovers often turn out to be willing to stab you in the back when you least expect it. The only problem was that he might have started to put quantity over quality a little too much in the last ten years or so.

It's been a long time since I've been really excited about an X album, though I did like his "Love, Hell or Right" album from 2013. Now the New York artist is back with "Agua" sporting a pretty damn impressive cast list of guest producers and emcee partners. How about Pete Rock, Diamond D, Da Beatminerz, Nick Wiz, DJ Scratch, Easy Mo Bee, Fokis, Dub Sonata and Will Tell? What about Lord Jamar, Dres, Edo G, A-F-R-O, Rahzel, Cella Dwellas' UG, Milano, Shabaam Sahdeeq, RA The Rugged Man, and Wordsmith? That's a lot of features and producers and as I haven't had the time to listen yet I'm not sure how cohessive the X-Man has managed to make it sound but one thing's for sure, there's bound to be several real bangers on here to cherish. Probably more than any Sadat X albums in ten years or so. Released on Tommy Boy, the album is available for purchase in both physical and digital form now, and can also be streamed and purchased (both digital and on CD) in full via X's official Bandcamp. One thing though, the last I heard from Sadat X was that he's working on a full-length album entirely produced by Diamond D, and as usual we get one track to show for it. Well, I for one hope it's still coming. But what the hell, with Pete Rock, Da Beatminerz and Nick Wiz I sure as hell can complain. I also wasn't a fan of Will Tell on some earlier X albums, but the single/video "Murder Soundtrack" (above) with AFRO and Rahzel has convinced me has stepped his game up big time. BLACK SHEEP Ft. Red Alert, Chi-Ali & Sadat X - "Peace Phife"

It's about time we get a proper tribute to the legend known as Phife Dawg that passed over to the other side on March 22 due to his long struggle with diabetes. One thing's for sure his conrtribution to Hip Hop will always be remembered as something special. Over a soul laced production by Jim B. fellow Natives Tongues member Dres rounds up DJ Red Alert, Chi-Ali and Sadat X - all original friends and collegoues of The Five Footer - and they all do a commendable job in putting a worthy song on wax in celeberation of the life and times of this great artist and man. Please support by purchasing the song from Dres Bandcamp as all proceeds will go straight to Phife's family.

ONYX Ft. Sadat X, Nature, Steele, Ali Vegas - "The Tunnel" [Big Kap Remix]

Though not being the biggest fan of Snowgoons despite everybody seeming to jump on their bandwagon they obviously produce some heat from time to time. "The Tunnel" with Cormega and Papoose from Onyx's 'Goons' laced "#WakeDaFuckUp!" was definitely such an instance. Now the album is being revisited with a few additional remixes tacked on to the end, perhaps in preparation for the rumoured M.O.P./Goons/Onyx collaboration and the illest of the bunch is the Big Kap Tribute remix to "The Tunnel" (both the song and the legendary club). Although it would have been cool to get new verses by 'Mega and Pap' as well, Sadat X, Nature, Steele and Ali Vegas represent well on this cut. 

"#WakeDaFuckUp: Reloaded" is available via Bandcamp and features the original 14 songs along with four additional remixes, including "Dirty Chops" featuring Chris Rivers and 100 Mad's Remix of "TurnDaFuckUp" which is now a posse cut featuring SickFlo, Sicknature and Snake The Rapper. [Stream] SILENT SOMEONE - "I Have A Company"

From time to time you stumble upon an utterly dope underground release whose existence you didn't have a clue about. Such is the case with Bronx producer Silent Someone who I'm slightly acquainted wit through two excellent remixes he did for Soundsci, a powerhouse quintet that readers of this blog knows I have supported almost since day #1 and who is steadily building up one of the most impressive back catalouges any of this type of throwback hip-hop group has been able to produce. Beside four to five excelent group records (LP:s and EPs), Oxygen has released plenty of dope 12"s, EP:s and various guest spots, Audessey released one of the best albums of 2014 with producer A Kat Called Fritz and on the 9th of this month UGeorge is releasing a mindblowingly smooth, soulful yet boom banging LP called "The Many Faces Of U-George" (get ready for a review very soon). When recently talking to Jonny Cuba, one half of 'Sci's production team The Herbalizer, he put me on to a very smooth vintage hip-hop LP by producer Silent Someone (who previously has remixed two Soundsci joints for an official 7" and has provided some choice cuts for the aforementioned UGeorge LP). It turns out that Silent Someone dropped a full length album over a year ago that really flew under my radar, and I'm sure a lot of other heads. 

Titled "I Have A Company" Silent gets busy on the MPC, killing the turntables, and expertly chopping some rare but vintage funk, soul and jazz samples to create that true hip-hop vibe. Cuba even went as far as calling it his favorite album of 2014 so be sure to give it a chance. While Silent stands for all production and cuts, vocal parts are assembled from everyone from Sadat X, John Robinson, Akbar, El Da Sensei, Shaz IllYork, Tame One, Dave Dar, and more. SADAT X & EL DA SENSEI - "We Must Stand"

The OG Sadat X has teamed up with El Da Sensei to form a new duo called XL. Their first single is called "We Must Stand" and is a heatrock produced by 9th Wonder. This will be followed by a full-length album called AVX Records/Empire Distribution.

AG - "Marcberri" [Vinyl Bonus Tracks]

AG's 2010 album "Everything's Berri" kind of threw me for a loop when I first heard it. The lyrics were all there as usual with one of the all time greats, but I was dissappointed with the sound at first as it was the first time I heard the D.I.T.C. legend go in without any of his D.I. brethren, or other intense outside producers such as Madlib, Dilla, E-Blaze, Jake One, and so on. This was the first time the world heard Ray West, and it definitely took some time to adjust to his somewhat unorthodox way of chopping samples and arranging songs, which is why I was initially dissappointed in "Everything's Berrii". However, as time has moved on, Ray West has become one of the main affiliated producers of the D.I. camp and as I said in my previous post, with each release he has came more into his own and his last two mini albums has been that STRAIGHT FIRE. And now going back and listening to the album that set it all off I realize that its a lot better than what I had first seen it, though it's not a masterpiece like A's albums with Show or West's later work with OC, AG and John Robinson and the LuvNY collective.

Originally released on CD only in 2010 by Fat Beats, not too long ago the label and the duo decided to press up a limited amount of vinyl runs for the project. This 2xLP set has a few tracks not featured on the original CD, and while I posted the extended "Marcberg" when the team released it as a single I just realized (again while doing the producer post below this one) that Ray West 45 @ Soundcloud had actually posted streams to all three exclusive songs in full. This was three months ago, but like I always say in these types of situation - better late than never, that's for damn sure! First out is the aforementioned "Marcberg" extended version, which is absolutely beautiful and makes me truly wonder why the hell it was cut short in the first place. The original album version used it as a kind of skit with only a fat but short Roc Marciano verse before cutting to the next song. Here Roc's verse are followed by a hook and an equally ill AG verse. Then you got another really crazy joint called "Buster's Train" that follows none other than Sadat X, and we all know that the X-Man and AG has a crazy chemistry together. The slow blues influenced joint that closes the sampler is a remix of "Infected", a song that appeared on the CD in its original format. If you're a vinyl head and haven't grabbed "Got Berries?" yet, be sure to do so from e.g. HHV (I can't find it at Fat Beats or UGHH which probably means it's sold out as it was a limited release). Oh well, at least you can hear the three extra tracks below and they are all fat!

[Limited Edition] DJ CRUCIAL - "Retro Active"

DJ Crucial is a name well known to some of us hip-hop junkies that love reading those linear notes, you'll recognize the names from his production work on great tracks by MF Grimm, Jia Davis, Juice, Hi-Fidel, Black Spade, Count Bass D, and many more. My personal favorite is the exclusive 12" version of "The Gingerbread Man" that he made for MF Grimm back in 2005. 

Now the small label Trash Flow and F5 Records is releasing a very limited run of 200 double copies of an exclusive DJ Crucial tape, featuring vocal tracks on cassette one (black) and instrumentals on the second (white). "Retro Active" features a host of absolutely amazing artists and hip hop legends, all going in over DJ Crucial bangers, all previously unreleased and recorded between 1993 and 2014. How about MF Grimm, Large Professor, Capo, Sadat X, Black Spade, EDO G, Grand Puba, Jia Davis and many more. I would absolutely love to hear it, I really hope they drop it on wax or CD as I can't even play cassettes anymore and looking at the tracklist and hearing the first single it's easy to tell that THIS NEEDS TO BE HEARD! [Video] Diamond D - "Superman"

Damn, I don't think I even posted the "Superman" video, one of only two Diamond D solo cuts on the best producers on the mic most recent hip-hop heast. This is also the only record on the album not produced by Joseph Kirkland himself, as DJ Scratch stepped in to do the honor. Word is that this was a song made for DJ Scratch album that was instead given to Diamond bcécause he liked it so much. It's never too late  for some "Diam Piece" y'all!

Oh and if you missed the news last week, Sadat X has officially signed a one album deal to Diam's Diamond Mine Records which means that The X-Man's entire next album will be produced by The Best Kept Secret. Stay tuned!

[Album] GRAND DADDY I.U. - "PIMP (Paper is My Priority)"

It's a true fucking shame the way Grand Daddy I.U.'s career has been handled. In 1990 the Stroong Island spitter and producer released his debbut albbum on Cold Chillin, ""Smooth Assassin", that to this day is viewed as one of the lost Cold Chillin' Classics of the late '80s/early 90s. After another album on C.C. in 1994 and an intense guest verse on Big L's "Da Graveyard" he kind of faded into obscurity until 2006s when he came back with "Stick 2 The Script", a stellar LP featuring real ass lyrics over beats by Grand Daddy IU himself (who's a very skilled producer in his own right), Large Pro, DJ Dooom, Marco Polo, Chucky Madness and Lotto. More recently he gave a lassting impression on Diamond D's recent "The Diaam Pieece" LP on the single/video "The Game".

Now I.U. has completed another album that he just released on our asses called "P.I.M.P. (Paper is My Priority)". I'm in the midst of listening to it right now, but this is fucking serious, for a quick eexample take a listen to the single/video "Suasquatch Feet" above, produced by GWop Sullivan.. This track is really, really dope - I.U. really got some thing on his mind and it he does it straight from the heart. The booming beats, turntable work, beauituful trumpet and the piano keys samples makes this a real winner. And as far as I'm hearing at this moment (I've bumped about half by now, ni skips) the entire album is in the same vein, Grand Daddy I.U. is the true definition of a  low-key legend, been doing great music for more than 25 years, inspired countless commercially more succesfull artists (including Nas and Jay-Z) yet only real music conniseours even know the name, But what the hell, at least he got a loyal fan bse, just wish it was bigger.

So far the album is available for digital HQ purchase and free streaming (which you'll find below), but will also be released on CD and limited golden cassette via RedLineMusicDistribution on March 17. The vast majority of the 20 track set is produced by the artist himself, with very few exceptiions, the aforementioned single "My Neck Of The Woods" is done by BLUNT; the intro is a Marco Polo banger; and finally ´"Sasquatch Feet" were produced by GWop Sullivan. HELL RAZAH - "Gates Of Hell" / "Patriot Act: The Mixtape"

This was actually released a couple of weeks back but I haven't gotten around to listen to it until now and totally forgot to post about it. Strictly a digital release, Hell Razah's latest album is entitled "Gates of Hell" and packs a mean punch of fourteen tracks of straight, uncut dope. There's a lot of vintage soul samples, bumping rhythm tracks, high pitched vocal hooks, and a whole lot of knowledge delivered in Razah's usual clear cut vocab. With a guest apperance by Sadat X on "Contribution X" a long with strong cuts such as "Falling Down", "Dead Poets", "Godflesh" (the single streaming above) and "The Crucifixion" this is a suprisingly strong album that I strongly recommended. Clocking it at just over thirty minutes, it's a short but powerful listen filled with clever rhymes with an important message.  I wonder whether this is newly recorded music or if this was recorded before Razah's medical problems. Either way he sounds on fire all the way through - on first listen I'd say this is one of his strongest projects yet, most definitely. Unfortunately no stream is available, but it's definitely worth the purchase from iTunes.

SADAT X - "What Up Kid"

While Sadat X has released a string of solo albums that aren't exactly masterpieces, each of his albums always continues at the very least a handful of gems (there's of course some real dope LP:s in his catalouges as well, such as "Wild Cowboys", "Experience and Education", the entire Brand Nubian catalouge, etc., and I actually really enjoyed the majority of "Love, Hell or Right"). He has been working on his "Never Left" album for quite some time, which so far has resulted in the slamming single/video for "On Fire" featuring Cormega, and a few other singles. You can stream/purchase the four singles released so far as well as pre-order the album for its January 25, 2015 release @ Loyalty Digital's Bandcamp. This includes the just released "What Up Kid", produced by Matt Velez. The tracklist also reveals guest features from Black Rob, King Tee, Dres of Black Sheep, Craig, Skyzoo and more. I'm hopeful!

[Album] SILENT SOMEONE - "I Have Company"

I'm a big fan of Silent Someone's 2012 album "Change" and its powerful grooves of laid back jazz and hard rhythms. Now the Bronx producer is back with his new project, "I Have Company", featuring a host of talented emcees from the States going in over Silent's raw hip-hop, complete with funk and jazz influences. Artists getting busy over these tracks include Akbar, Shaz Illyork, El Da Sensei, King Magnetic, John Robinson, Tame One, Emskee, Sadat X, and many more. Dave Dar appears on the single "El Greco" which you can see the new music video for up top. Released on Peasant Podium Music back in March of this year, you can stream the entire album for free or purchase the digital copy @ their Bandcamp page (also embeded below). Seems to be a digital release only for now, but well worth checking out.

[Demo] DIAMOND x SADAT X x KAMARI are The OMEN

Diamond D and Sadat X has an absolutely terrific track record dating back to their early beginnings at Jazzy Jay Studios that has lasted until to today. These guys many collaborations is definitely something I should make one of my Lost Tapes compilation on, but until then I thought I'd dig up this quite interesting demo project for a group called The Omen that was recorded in the early '00s. The trio consisted of Sadat X, female emcee Kamari and Diamond D on beats and rhymes. I remember hearing this some years ago and wasn't all that impressed by the majority of the tracks, but as time has passed I came to realize there's without a doubt some proper heat as well. 

The Omen was a very short lived group; in 2002 they released two double-A side singles on Fat Beats and Up Above Records; "Do It Now" / "Get On Up" and "It's Our World" / "Half Steppin'". "It's Our World" also appeared as an exclusive joint on DJ Rhettmatic's 2004 compilation album "Exclusive Collection". While neither Sadat X or Diamond has been outspoken about the project in interviews, my guess is that they were working on a full-length album that was close to being wrapped but when the 12" singles failed to make any noice, they put the project on the shelf where it has stayed. Luckily, at least this close to 30 minutes long demo tape leaked to the internet, giving fans a taste of what we could have expected from this LP if it had ever materialized. Of course, it's a far cry from the stronger material by the main artists and producer but it's an interesting listen for D.I.T.C. and Brand Nubian conniseours nontheless. At least half the songs bang pretty hard, and the final Godzilla sampling hardthumping banger of a monster really will get heads nodding with its on point lyrics and dark, beautiful production. Same goes for "Put It Down", the funky old school flirt "Just Can't Fuck With It Us", and so on. All songs from the 12":s are included beside the "It's Our World" joint, despite it being one of their strongest collabos if you ask me,

Who Kamari is I have absolutely no clue, since she seemed to completely dissapeared from the recording scene after The Omen failure. Most of the tracks appear in full, while some of the songs cuts off after about three minutes. There's also no track titles given for anything, but interestingly enough the first song (which might very well be the tapes strongest) is an extended version of "Put It Down" that also made it to Diamond's mixtape-type album "Grown Man Talk" in 2003 (that version cuts out Kamari's verse though).Like I said these demo never came with track titles but based that at least three of the single songs appear here, plus the "Put it Down" joint I tried to put down a tracklist below, using the hook for the titles on the remaining songs. [Album] DANNY SPICE - "Live @ The Throwback"

Danny Spice & The Wildstyle Crew is coming with a vintage NYC hip-hop sounding EP on limited 12" and digital on Crate Escape Records, and this will definitely be a crazy fucking project. We previously heard the thumping single with my man Oxygen, "Code Red", and now the entire "Live @ The Throwback" EP has been unleashed on Crate Escape Records. There's sure no shortage of dope cuts on here, fellow Soundsci member Audessey pops up for the soulful boom bap tinged "Night Stalkers", the mighty Sadat X joins Finsta, Cappo, and Emskee on the heavy posse cut "Art Of War", just to name a few. This is one of the best projects recently, right up my alley - it got that retro feel, like it could have been made in the '80s, '90s or 2000's but what people don't get is that that sound is TIMELESS so it's not dated music just cuz you're taking it back. Kris Flava is a new prodcer represemting the UIKkscene; last month he dropped the '90s flava "Pordgies" and wih it's deep bass ine, jazz vibes, turntables amd polyrhyhm rhyme patterns this could be a beat sraight from Brand Nubian's "In n God We Trust"and " Everything is Everything"especially with the extended Sadat X vocal saple from the Brand Nu masterpiece "Pumks Jump Up to Get Beat Down (Video Remix)¨

CAPONE N NOREAGA / SADAT X - "Bringing the Gods Back"

While I have a kind of ambivalent relationship to CNN, as I feel that their debut album is one of the finest hardcore hip-hop LP:s ever crated. and "The Reuion" was pretty dope too. Since then it's been up and down, I did ike "War Report 2" quite a bit, but its been a real long time snce we had a masterpiece from the camp, whether group or solo effort. That don't mean that they occassionaly pump out heavy bangers ona semi-regular basis; the latest being a new single featuring none other than the always incredible Sadat X who gives a memorable performance on ¨Bringing the God Back". Rumour says that this will appear on a new CNN album to drop in 2015, we'll see what happens with that but it's an exciting thought. Stay tuned!'

[EP + Video] ZION I - "Liberations"

Underground duo Zion I has been dropping a lot of dope music for years, so a new EP from them is of course always welcome. I'm a little late on this as I totally missed out on this, but just got an e-mail about their new video for the album cut "Get Urs", a heavy posse cut featuring Sadat X, Opio, Mr. Lif, Deuce Eclipse and Kev Choice. While making this post I realized that Zion recently dropped a new Extended Play as a digital release, which you can stream or download for free via Bandcamp so be sure to check that one out.

CORMEGA Ft. INSPECTAH DECK / ROCK MARCIANO / SADAT X / LORD JAMAR - "Industry - Deluxe Remix"

Cormega and Large Professor once again rounds up some of the greatest emcees of all time for a remix of "Industry". They actually revealed the line-up for this remix around the time for the release of "Mega Philosophy" in an interview with XXL (very good read), so I've been eagerly awaiting this banger and it does not dissapoint. If you still haven't grabbed 'Mega's latest it's not too late to support the movement - grab @ iTunes, UGHH or HHV. Also the vinyl edition is being repressed and will be available for purchase again on October 17.

Juelz Ft. Sadat X, Torae & Samas - "Silence is Golden"

Born and raised in Arbon, Switzerland, Julian Juelz moved to Houston, Texas with no knowledge of the english language. Now he's an American emcee, and that's pretty damn impressive.
