Apathy Ft. M.O.P. & Celph TItled - "Stomp Rappers"

I'm not the biggest fan of Apathy I've we're being one hundred, but the kid does have bars, a great ear for beats and gets some great guests on his record (just check the entire album he did with OC last year for example). On the first Friday of March (2/3) he is releasing "The Widow's Son" and based on the singles and credits this one will be worth to hear at least a couple of times. For the love of Hip Hop I'm posting all of the singles including the latest joint which features none other than Lil' Fame and Billy Danze over the appropriately titled self-produed "Stomp Rappers".

The real winners are the three earlier singles, produced by Nottz, Pete Rock (and featuring Pharoahe Monch) and DJ Premier's "The Order". Looking at the tracklist, it seems that as far as outside credits we have gotten all of the best shit aisde from the AG and DJ Mekalek-assisted "Never Fall Off".

[Mixtape] CAPPADONNA x PETE ROCK - "Hip Hop"

This mixtape dropped a coupe of months back but the way it's been totally lacking in promotion and so on is just insane. About a year or so ago there was word on Pete Rock's twitter that he was producing a project for a Wu-Tang Clan member - and that Wu-Tang Clan member was Cappadonna. Then out of nowhere, with hardly any promo, Cappa drops this 12 track mixtape called "Hip-Hop: The Mixtape" and he's not even making it a thing that it is produced by Pete Rock on the front cover but instead he big up the DJ, DJ Intrigue. I think Cappa need a new team becaue this is just ridiciolous. Sure the sound quality varies greatly on this tape, but the music is by far the best Cappa has put out since at least "The Pilgrimage" (very underrated album btw) and is so much better than recent bullshit like "The Pillage 2","The Cappitalize Project", and on and on and on.

These 12 tracks brings out great music out of Pete Rock, Soul Brother #1 and the chemistry between him and Cappadonna on tracks like "I Cried", "Walking Down The Street" and "Rhytmic Explosion" is album worthy material. Had this been engineered, mixed and mastered propetly and perhaps added 2-3 tracks this would have been a home run for both artists. But as it is now not many people don't even know that there is a full Pete Rock / Cappadonna joint so I'm here to enlighten you.

You can download the entire tape @ GLF Ent and stream the entire project up top via YouTube. Don't sleep on this, because it's fuego. And don't forget to TURN IT UP!!

[comp] PETE ROCK - "This is the NEW Shit"

Since I first heard ".T.R.O.Y.", "Shut 'Em Down", Pete's take on "Jump Around", "Nighttrain" and so many more, I've heald Pete as one of the holy trinity of Hip-Hop production. There's of course plenty of great rducers out there, but Pete reallt walked the extra mile putting together and layering something rottally original. This was the early '90s and songs like "T.R.OY", "The Basement" and basically the whole LP, there never was a qiuestion Pete Rock still got it. Simple as that. His sound might have changed quite a bit since the classic SP1200 days with CL Smooth and "Letterman" but though the man is still cranking out bangers on a semi-regular basis, he sure as hess stillgot,. In the last couple of years he served Hip Hop heads with serious dopeness on his full-length collaboration with Smif-N-Wessun ("Monumental"), brought out the ill instrumental grooves on "Petestrumentals II" and released two free digital mixtapes with Camp Lo that featured enough hot exclusives to make up a nice little album. One of the joys of being a dedicated Pete Rock fan, however, is not only checking for his LP releases and special projects but of course to keep eyes and ears open for whatever singles he's invited to produce or remix. While his work in the 2010s might not be as consistantly mindblowing as his early '90s years there's been plenty of Pete Rock heatrocks released on various albums over the last three years or so. Ron Carter was a bassic that Miles wanTed in his badn fot quote time -and thereS unodubtedly weak homes. "There Will Be Blood" is undoubtddly one of the best children's

Last week I saw a GREAT concert performance by Pete Rock and CL Smooth in Copenhagen which really got me in a Soul Brother listening mode. Hence I dug up this compilation I made a while back for personal listening, but why not share the goods, right? This comp is basically an overlook of Stank for other artists between 2012 and 2016. I've tried to find all joints in the best possible quality as far as Mp3 goes (320 kbps) but a few of the songs is in lower bitrate as that was how they hit the internet in the case of some of these digital loosies. Either way it's a pretty cool front-to-back listen for anyone who still considers himself a Pete Rock fan... Check it out!

01. Torae - "Get Down"
02. Edo G - "Let Da Horns Blow"
03. Ill Bill - "Truth"
04. .38 Spesh - "Gone" (Ft. Sean Hayes)
05. Mack Wilds - "Duck Sauce"
06. Mac Miller - "Melt" (Ft. Schoolboy Q)
07. Robert Glasper Experiment - "Black Radio" RMX (Ft. Yasiin Bey)
08. Panda Bear - "Crosswords" RMX
09. NORE - "Vitamins" (Ft. Pete Rock)
10. Styles P - "Children" (Ft. Pharoahe Monch)
11. .38 Spesh - "Support" (Ft. Styles P)
12. Blu - "The Clean Hand"
13. Edo G - "2 Turntables & A Mic"
14. Ill Bill - "When I Die" RMX
15. Mack Wilds - "The Art Of Falling"
16. Smoke DZA - "Achieve"

G.HUFF Ft. VICE SOULETRIC - "Bills!" [prod. PETE ROCK]

To be honest I don't have a clue who G. Huff and Vice Souletric are but considering their single is produced by one of the all time great hip hop producers/DJ it warrants a post for sure. Especially since I will hit you up with a Pete Rock compilation (focusing on his work from between 2012 and 2016) later today, when I get back home. Unfortunately I am at work right now and can only hear this joint through super wack laptop speakers so it's hard to judge the song, but it sounds like Pete brought out his signature soul for this session. Check it out...

[Album] SADAT X - "Agua"

When the world first heard The Brand Nubians 1990 debut album "One For All", notorious for being praised with the much hyped five mics rating in The Source, few would think that Derreck X would be the artist out of that trio to have the highest profile and largest catalouge in a few years. In fact "One For All" treated Lord Jamar and Derreck X as Grand Puba's back up band, and didn't even appear on half of the album. But sometimes the tables turn, through hard work and dedication Sadat X (as he soon after changed his name to) crafted a unique style with an unmistakable voice with lyrics that often dealt with personal feelings and surviving in a world where friends and lovers often turn out to be willing to stab you in the back when you least expect it. The only problem was that he might have started to put quantity over quality a little too much in the last ten years or so.

It's been a long time since I've been really excited about an X album, though I did like his "Love, Hell or Right" album from 2013. Now the New York artist is back with "Agua" sporting a pretty damn impressive cast list of guest producers and emcee partners. How about Pete Rock, Diamond D, Da Beatminerz, Nick Wiz, DJ Scratch, Easy Mo Bee, Fokis, Dub Sonata and Will Tell? What about Lord Jamar, Dres, Edo G, A-F-R-O, Rahzel, Cella Dwellas' UG, Milano, Shabaam Sahdeeq, RA The Rugged Man, and Wordsmith? That's a lot of features and producers and as I haven't had the time to listen yet I'm not sure how cohessive the X-Man has managed to make it sound but one thing's for sure, there's bound to be several real bangers on here to cherish. Probably more than any Sadat X albums in ten years or so. Released on Tommy Boy, the album is available for purchase in both physical and digital form now, and can also be streamed and purchased (both digital and on CD) in full via X's official Bandcamp. One thing though, the last I heard from Sadat X was that he's working on a full-length album entirely produced by Diamond D, and as usual we get one track to show for it. Well, I for one hope it's still coming. But what the hell, with Pete Rock, Da Beatminerz and Nick Wiz I sure as hell can complain. I also wasn't a fan of Will Tell on some earlier X albums, but the single/video "Murder Soundtrack" (above) with AFRO and Rahzel has convinced me has stepped his game up big time. You can also cop the physical from UGHH where you can also see the credits for each track. TURN IT UP!

[Throwback Video] RZA, Pete Rock & Mark Morales Discuss Beats

Along with the homie FatboyBrandon, YouTube poster Hezakaya is something of a legend in Wu-Tang fans circles these days as he got tons of rare clips of the Clan and some other hip-hop legends on shows like Yo! MTV Raps and most you can imagine. And he is willing to share them for free whch is of course super appreciated. I made a good find yesterday that he had uploaded somewhat recently which is a sitdown between Fab 5 Freddy, Pete Rock, The RZA and Prince Markie Dee (original member of Fat Boys who later started producing R&B and Soul records under his real name Mark Morales). This was taped in 1995 and I have never seen this before and its some neat footage, no doubt. Check it up top and props to Hezakaya (oh the clips after the interview concludes about midway through is from the underrated movie"The Show").

[Review] J DILLA - "THE DIARY"

There is only one more album that needed release from the late great James Yancey and we are finally getting it in all its intended glory. I'm talking about "The Diary", originally known as "Pay Jay". Egon of Stones Throw told a story of Dilla told him when he was real sick that he wanted the complete "Ruff Draft" out there (which by then was out-of-print for a long time), he wanted his shelved MCA album that he put a lot of work into to finally get a proper release and of course he entrusted Karriem Riggins (who already was a huge part of the original sessions) to complete the final 15-25% of "The Shining" for BBE. "Ruff Draft", the expanded edition, was released almost immediatly, and so was "The Shining". But the MCA album, "The Diary", which was originally recorded between late 2000 and very early 2002 has taken until 2016 to finally see a release. The reason for this is because it wasn't entirely complete (maybe 90%), and since Yancey had choosed to work with so many different producers on this one, there was a lot of publishing paperworks that had to be sorted out - not to mention getting the rights from MCA. Luckily Dilla had somewhat carte blanche when recording it and as per usual recorded pre-production in his basement and tracked the real joints at Studio, Dearborn, MI with Todd Fairall as his engineer. It has taken it's time, but thanks to a joint venture between Egon's and Madlib's Rappcats imprint and Nas' Mass Appeal label we finally gets the physical copy of the final album that the bear the artists decision of what it should sound like not to be have been yet released and as such this is definitely the final Dilla project I'm purchasing - as any true fan of Yancey's music ought to do.

If you don't know the story about the album before, Dilla got signed to MCA on the strength of his production work and praise from artists like Busta Rhymes, Common, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson, The Pharcyde and so on. But Jay Dee having just left Slum Village wanted this album to focus on his MC ability, rather than his production skills something that didn't sit too well with the execs at the time. He did craft a few beats for the project, but also invited some of his current favorites such as Madlib, Hi-Tek, Karriem Riggins and his Soulquarian's broherhood, Wajeed, Pete Rock, Supa Dave West, Kanye West, House Shoes, Nottz and Bink! He had received some flack for his rhyming on Slum Village projects ("Fantastic" 1+2) which to me is absurd. Yancey was never a lyricist but with his incredible sense of rhythm he could ride a beat incredibly well, and his voice was outstanding. At least to my ears!

So on to the album.. Is it perfect? No it is not. I'm a fan of Dilla for his production mainly, though he got some nice MC tricks up his sleeve as well. The thing is that most of the time that when Dilla produces one of these songs it often end up being one of its best, and as proven before he is quite limited in the topics he choose to rhyme about. But is it a weak album. No, it is not, not by any means. It is much better than the majority of these B.S. posthumous releases we has gotten from the Dilla estate - this is actually a real Jay Dee album, just as much as "The Shining" or "Welcome 2 Detroit". And there's plenty of gems here. The most obvious being the self-produced "Fuck The Police", built around a very simple breakbeat and a flute sample but with extremely powerful hook and verses. I've seen Frank-N-Dank, Guilty Simpson and other "D" cats perform this one live in tribute and whether or not the crowd knows the song beforehand they always LOVE IT and sing along to the hook. Brilliant, and one of Dilla's finest solo songs - if not the finest bar none actually.
Another song I really liked which was close to the opening on the album on the leaked copies (2008) called "We F'd Up", a driving, pulsating, club track with an underground sensibility that featured Jay Dee trading bars with Frank-N-Dank over an early KanYe West production. Strangely enough this version has been replaced by a remix by the main artist called "The Anthem" - it's most certainly is a remix and not the original version as it doesn't have the original flow of the lyrics on especially the hook. The question then begs why was this included instead - was this Dilla's vision. It's been a long known fact that Kanye West contributed this song to the project at the request of the artist and he has many time been on record praising the shit out of him. Could it be that he didn't give them permission to use his version anymore? If so, FUCK HIM! It is hurting the album a bit, since "The Anthem" is a pretty good joint but doesn't come close to the version I'm accustomed to by West (strangely enough all versions of that song has been deleted from YouTube and Soundcloud). I uploaded it myself so y'all can judge for yourself.

Then there's the absolutely brilliant two parter "The Shining" ("Diamonds") and ("Ice") which explores the same topic but from a male and female perspective [*title thaught about long before the 2006 album]. "Diamonds" is one of the best songs on the album, produced by Nottz who always does a fine job, who lays down a sunny foundation as Dilla goes in on how Diamonds are a girls best friend. The second part is a short one and half minute excursion celebration of the ice he himself love to rock, and is a funy outing by Madlib which appeared as the B-side to a Jaylib 12" once MCA shelved this album. It's interesting that I always used to add "Ice" to my homemade tracklist of what this album probably coud have been long before I know this, but it has that sound - more so than a Jaylib sound. Another long time fan favorite amongst Dilla enthusiast is of course "Trucks", where Dilla playfully reimagines Gary Numan's 1979 hit "Cars" into a playful Hip Hop excursion. It was never one of my personal favorites, but it is kind of dope once you get used to it. And more than that, it shows that Dilla was never afraid to experiment and in some ways it's a precursor to "Electric Circus" a long with the Karriem Riggins/Soulquarian's collaboration "Drive Me Wild" which almost sound like a crazy Boom Bap take on the original Batman theme. As you can hear this is a well-rounded album to say the least.

Among the tracks that has never been leaked before (though one of them has appeared quite recently is on one of those Rappcats EP) are some real heat. You got the excellent title track, produced by House Shoes and Dilla, that captures that Detroit sound very well - almost like a remnant from "Welcome 2 Detroit" with its mix of Ghettotech and boom bap. The minimalistic, dark, hard bouncing and almost hypnotic backdrop has all the hallmarks of two hip-hop cats growing up in the city that pretty much invented techno but always loved that boom bap shit. It is an effective opener but I can't help to think that had Dilla lived there's no question in my mind that the real intro to this album is the title track ("The Diary") which instead closes out the album here and also did so on the 2008 unmastered MCA leak (which was most likely an assembled work-in-assembly either way). That is a short track by Bink (which would later give it to GZA for "Animal Planet" when the LP was shelved), but it features Dilla talking about his trials and tribulations growing up in the D, giving listeners a brief overview of the themes you are about to hear on the album before closing it out by saying "Sit down I got a story to tell.. This is the diary of J Dilla"!). The album is thematic in that it's formed as an aural diary in rap form and you don't write a diary by putting the last page first. My advice is to put on "The Diary", press repeat all and then let it go back to "The Introduction" after that. Either way a blazing "new cut" is Dilla's remix of Supa Dave West's "The Doe" (available on EP through RappCats but also as a digital bonus track on iTunes for the abum) - although West's excellent "So Far To Go" made the album). Dilla's remix is a lot harder, true hardcore hip-hop with a lot of hilarious quotables over a chest thumping beat and retitled "Give 'Em What They Want"... Or as he himself put it in the intro GRIZZLY!!!

This is already a long review and I'm not going to go through every song, but there are two more joints we need to touch on. The first is "The Ex", produced by Jay Dee's musical hereo (in Hip Hop at least) - Pete Rock - and featuring the wonderful voice of Bilal. This is a very smooth joint were Dilla and Bilal talks about past relationships and how it can leave a mark on both parties. This joint has been in constant rotation for me about a year ago when I was in a similiar situation. The 2008 leak had a J Dilla remix of the same track which is not included on the album, I'ma post it up later for those who might not have heard it. The second track is "Gangsta Boogie", one of the tracks that had never been leaked before hand, and this was mentioned in a very old interview with either Egon or Peanut Butter Wolf. It's a Hi-Tek production featuring Snoop Dogg and Kokane, and it was one of the songs that never was completed in time when the album was shelved and abandoned. Jay Dee's parts were completely done, the beat was finished and possibly Kokane's parts as well - the problem was that Dilla is passing the microphone to Snoop Dogg who had agreed to partake but never got around to it in time. So the Snoop Dogg verse is new but it's all pretty seamless and it's a nice joint on a varied record.

All in all, "The Diary" (along with "48 Hours" by Frank-N-Dank) is the missing link(s) between "Welcome 2 Detroit" and "Ruff Draft" and the executive producers has made an absolute wonderful job in doing their very best to keep everything as it would have sounded. Had Dilla been able to complete it (it's only the Kanye West thing that bugs me - how the fuck is he not gonna let them use it for free considering how many times he said Dilla was his hero), but maybe the intention was all around that Dilla wasn't happy with West's contribution and was supposed to remix it into "The Anthem" all along. Perhaps "The Anthem" was supposed to be the first single and Kanye's version was the intended B-side. But this is just speculation.... The iTunes version includes a couple of bonus tracks not intended for the original album so I leave those be and strongly recommend this to any true Jay Dee fans - it's not perfect but it is without a doubt the most interesting and necessary J Dilla album since "The Shining" although if we're talking strictly music I must admit I prefer "Jay $tay Paid". So pick this one up, it comes highly recommended but can we please let Dilla rest in peace now?

[DJ Mix] J. ROCC x J DILLA - "DiLLAtronic Mix"

Whenever J. Rocc are in charge of a DJ mix you know it's going to be potent as hell and his "Thank You Jay Dee" series still holds up as perhaps the best tribute mixes to the late, great producer that has yet been produced. Just like he did with Pete Rock's instrumental 2015 banger "PeteStrumentals II" the legendary Beat Junkie has cooked down the excellent instrumental posthumous Dilla compilation "Dillatronic" that was released last fall into a seamless 30 minutes mix of his favorite moments from the original 40 tracks selection. While I did thoroughly enjoy the official compilation some of the beats were definitely drawn out for quite a bit too long so this is a good alternative experience of that same music which Dilla mostly recorded between early 2001 and late 2003 (covering unreleased beats from the period that brought us gems like "48 HRS", "Champion Sound", "Ruff Draft" and his work on projects like Slum Village's "Trinity" and Talib Kweli's "Quality"). Matter of fact given the short running time of both I would imagine playing J. Rocc's sets of this and the Pete Rock one back to back should be a great way to spend an hour of the best instrumental hip-hop avalable at the moment. TURN IT UP!!

DR. DRE, KURUPT & PETE ROCK - Freestyle Session

Dr. Dre had Kurupt and Pete Rock up on his Beats 1 radio show last night and this trio of legend burst into a freestyle session over some exclusive beats. Both tracks sounds more like Pete Rock joints to me, either way this is a great musical moment right here. Check it out.

TORAE - "Get Down" [prod. by PETE ROCK]

I was a huge fan of Torae and Pete Rock's previous collaboration together, "That Raw", so seeing that they are back at it again definitely peaked my interest. Titled "Get Down" this is further proof that a Torae produced Pete Rock album would be kind of fucking marvelous. This will appear on the Barrel Brother's upcoming new LP which is entitled "Entitled" - stay tuned and check out both the track and the BTS video posted up top.

[12'' Throwback] EDO G Feat. PETE ROCK - "Shed A Tear"

In late 2004 one of Boston's illest and most entertaining lyricists enlisted his friend and super producer Pete Rock for several sessions that yielded the excellent "My Own Worst Enemy" album. Seven of the ten songs were produced by Rock (Diamond D, DJ Revolution and Supreme One) filled out the remaining cuts. Clocking in at only forty minutes yet filled with clever and well delivered lyricism, excellent soulful but hard hitting beats and lots of tasteful turntable work it was definitely one of the best LP:s of 2004 and holds up just as god today. What might come as news to some of y'all is the duo also released a 12" single featuring two additional bangers that I suspect were cut from the album but created in the same sessions. The A-side "Shed A Tear" uses a beat created for "Soul Survivor II" as it appeared in instrumental form on the semi-official Pete instrumentals LP "The Survivng Elments". To me Edo G has proven that he's one of the best to rock on a Pete Rock track, ever since they first worked together in an official capacity on "Situations" from Ed's 2000 album "The Truth Hurts". Of course mroe recently Pete laced Edo G with three straight bangers on the latter's latest release, the criminally overlooked "After All These Years". Check out the two joints from the 2005 single below... The sound quality isn't the best considering it's a vinyl rip in 192 kbps but it's well worth a few spins!

[Future Flavas Throwback] PRODIGY & BIG NOYD

I've been going through a lot of classic moments from Pete Rock and Marley Marl's legendary Future Flavaz show in the late '90s and might very well post one of my favorites every now and then. First out is this absolutely mindblowing Prodigy and Big Noyd killing it over an unreleased Pete Rock or Marley Marl instrumental. This was most likely recorded in early '99 as P's first verse would later turn up on "Murda Muzik", the real gems here are the superb Noyd verse and especially the final Prodigy verse where he heartfelt touches on his sickle cell disease. To my knowledge none of these verses have never been released on anything before or since despite themd definitely needing to be heard. A big shout out and major thanks to my man Brandon aka Crates of Jr. for the upload, be sure to visit his excellent blog Collector's Item as well!

Panda Bear - "Crosswords" [Pete Rock Remix]

This is a pretty cool remix by the one and only Soul Brother #1 that I think some of y'all will love and many of you will hate, but fuck that I'm gonna post whatever Pete Rock's got poppin off. Comin' on the heels of his artistically sucesfull "PeteStrumentals II" and his free album with Camp Lo, Pete Rock lends his legendary remix talents, suprisingly enouh to a single by Panda Bear the singer of the experimental indierock group Animal Collective. The song is called "Crosswords" and while it's not a hip-hop track per se the beat do knock and reminds me of Pete's early remixes for acts like Basic Black when he was still a part of The Untouchables production crew. The Soul Brother version will appear on an upcoming remix EP of the "Panda Bears Meets The Grim Reaper".

J. ROCC Mix of PETE ROCK's "PeteStrumentals II"

The legendary DJ J. Rocc of The Beat Junkies always deliver straight heat when he gets on the turntables and crossfader, and this latest free mix is certainly no exception. As you know Pete Rock hooked up with Mello Music Group to finally release the long awaited sequel to his classic "PeteStrumentals" project (2001), an album that he's been promising in interviews since at least 2011. While the project fails to live up to it's predecessor Pete certainly didn't disappoint and at the moment it's one of my most played LP's. J. Rocc certainly liked it as well as he takes his favorite instrumentals of it and creates a seamless 20 minutes mix that stands on its own as a real smooth head nod inducer. Check it out below and make sure to cop "Petestrumentals II" if you haven't already!

[Album] PETE ROCK - "Petestrumentals 2"

I've been listening to this from front-to-back no less than three times today, The Soul Brother just came through and delivered his best record in about ten years or so. Released today via Mello Music Group, this is one of the first true must-buys for me this year, every minute of it is absolutely marvelous. Following the formula of the first "PeteStrumentals" (an album that I ranked as the third best album released during the first decade of the 2000s), Pete has dug deep into his old DATs and floppy discs to unearth previously unreleased beats from the '90s, created on his trusted SP1200, and fizzling with soul, jazz, and funk influences. The music has then been remixed, touched up and rearranged by Pete for its 2015 release, a combination that gives listeners the best of two worlds. Every single track is just groovy as hell, and a welcome addition is the huge amount of small musical interludes that are as dope as the actual songs themeselves. If you're not feeling this you are probably dead already. MMG, in usual order, let you stream the entire project for free before purchasing it in your choice of CD, digital or gatefold 2xLP. Guess what my choice will be? As Dilla probably says in heaven right now, TURN IT UP!!!

[Throwback] PETE ROCK - "Soul Survivor: The Documentary" (1998)

There's no denying that Pete Philips', better known as Pete Rock, is one of the major personage in hip-hop culture. Having released 12 albums that all range from classic to banging, as well as lacing immortal beats for the likes of EPMD, Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface, Public Enemy, Rakim, and so many more, his place in the annals of hip-hop is for ever sacred. With his second official instrumental full-length "PeteStrumentals 2" just around the corner (June 23 via Mello Music Group) I thought it was only right I'd bring back this incredible document of a classic album in the making courtesy of Loud Records '97-'98. I'm talking about the 45 minutes documentary that the label produced for the making of Pete Rock's solo debut "Soul Survivor" which landed in stores in November 1998. It took me some time to really get into the album when I first got it but after countless listens I can truly see just how incredibly dope this LP really is - just as good as "Center Of Attention" and "PeteStrumentals" and them classic gems. Unlike "Soul Survivor II" (2004) where Pete basically went with the one MC/one DJ formula, for this first installment Pete used his connections at Future Flavaz, LOUD Records and of course all of the artists whose respect he had earned throughout the years, to create an album with one of the illest tracklistings of all time.

When we see documentaries about the making of classic albums (like VH1's "Reasonable Doubt" episode on "The Making Of The Classic Album" or the new Nas "Illmatic" documentary) you usually have the people involved reminiscing about its creation. This doc right here is something else man, this is 45 minutes of fly on the wall documentary style as Pete and the many guests produce, record and oversees the creation of the record. Previously this has been up on YouTube in 6 parts but thanks to user MastaOne2K we can now enjoy the full thing without any breaks. As a little bonus I collected a few joints that didn't make the final cut or got changed. The video itself features some exclusive moments too, like an exclusive DOPE Cappadonna verse for example.

BIG L's "Who You Slidin' Wit" [Buckwild vs. Pete Rock]

People who have followed this blog for some years know that wile I do like a lot about Big L's only true posthumous album, given that he was actually working on it at the time of his death, true posthumous release "The Big Picture", it could have been so much better. Some years ago I made my own version of it, posted it and let you the readers decide whether my "A&R:d" version was closer to L's original vision than the sometimes cheesy shit that ended up in retail stores. Don't get me wrong, the album had plenty of hot joints, many of them recorded by L in his lifetime and released as the first singles from his upcoming album ("We Got This", "Ebonics", "Size 'Em Up", etc.). Yet other songs he recorded, albeit maybe a little dated at the time from a production standpoint, like "Games Females Play" were remixed into one of the albums absolute worst club imitating cuts that had me shaking my head in disbelief.

Luckily they had a lot of ill acapellas to work from, inviting bonafied legends like DJ Premier, Showbiz, Hi-Tek, Mike Heron and Pete Rock to add new boom bap type of soundbeds for L's masterful lyricism. But the latter producer I mentioned, who happens to be one of my all time favorites, turned the track that L recorded with Buckwild shortly before his passing into a superbly mediocre club anthem called "Who You Slidin' Wit", also adding an uneccesary verse by weed carrier Stan Spit (and as if that wasn't enough the one Pete Rock track that actually goes replaces the impeccable Party Arty once again with Stan Spit). The album version of "Who You Slidin' Wit" strangely sounds nothing like either Pete Rock or Big L, and considering that it's a "remix" (as using a total backdrop for the same vocals) of a song Buckwild gave L for inclusion on the LP, and was even cut at the very last minute in favor of the Soul Brother beat. SMH. Check out the album version up top and download the Buckwild original version below (320 kbps); a track that luckily made its way to the public through a very rare Rawkus promo of the album released in 1999, but we definitely needed more DITC/DJ Premier type of joints on this album and that's a fact.

PETE ROCK - "Heaven & Earth"

The third single from my most anticipated album of the year is here. I'm talking about the single "Heaven & Earth" from Pete Rock's upcoming sequel to "PeteStrumentals", his 2001 album that still ranks as a career highlight in the super producers long line of classic albums. Just like the first the album is made up of previously unreleased early- to- mid-'90's beats concocted by Pete that has been revamped for the 21st century. So far three singles have been released and they are all sounding iLL, with this one possibly being the best one yet. Watch out for the LP that drops June 22 via Mello Music Group!

PETE ROCK - "One, Two, A Few More"

The best news in music that I have heard all year is without a single doubt the just released fact that Pete Rock has hooked up with Mello Music Group to release a sequel to "PeteStrumentals". I've been waiting for some new P.R. for a while now but this is more than I could have even hoped for. The original 2001 album is one of my top 10 records to have been released in the new millennium, and I can't wait to see how this will live up to that legacy. For those of us who know there Soul Brother, "PeteStrumentals" was made up of previously unreleased Pete Rock beats recorded between 1991 and 1995 which was then mixed, perfected and mastered for the 2001 album and placed along with a few new tracks (The UN cuts). Judging by the first single, "One, Two, A Few More", it seems much of this will follow the same procedure as Mr. Philips states how he originally recorded the joint in '95 and have basically waited for the right time to release it. And it's a really slamming cut too with a superb funk groove right there. We'll have to wait until June 23, but like they say, he who waits for something dope...
