[Comp] BLAQ POET & DJ PREMIER - "Blaq Poetic Justice"

Earlier today I revisited one of my absolute favorite albums of 2009, "Tha Blaqprint", Blaq Poet's official full-length collaboration with DJ Premier. I, like many with me, first became aware of Poet's powerful presence and aggressive rhyming style via the excellent debut of Screwball, an album completely immersed in the ruff, rugged and raw New York City style boom bap. This is a path that Poet never steers away from - something which we all should be thankful for as he constantly delivers, giving us hardcore heads an injection of some pure, unfiltered hip hop shit. Going back to the Screwball album you could hear that he was extra charged up whenever he got a chance to murk a Preemo beat - especially evident on his solo outing "F.A.Y.B.A.N.". Not only that, but the legendary DJ himself often seems to hook up his nastiest beats when producing for rough edged cats that's heavy on the street element and possess aggresive flows. I'm talking cats like Bumpy Knuckles, M.O.P. and of course Poet. With these factors in mind it was a no brainer that the duo would hit the studio on and off for years, eventually creating enough material to be compiled into a full-length album... and then some.

When "Tha Blaqprint" was finally released in 2009, via Year Round Records, many of the tracks had been heard on radio shows and mixtapes going back as far as 2005. This caused some people to label the project a compilation or a street album, but personally I'd say that "Tha Blaqprint" is undoubtedly a proper album - as all of these songs saw their first true official release here and it's put together, sequenced and packaged like an album no matter how you slice and dice it. It would also mark the end of a long and fruitful partnership as Poet would leave Year Round a short while after the album dropped, which in one way is a shame but considering the fate of the other label signees like NYGz and MC Eiht it was probably for the better. Unfortunately the albums that have followed in its wake like "Blaq Poet Society" and "E.B.K." has certainly failed to grab me. Poet can be a thrill to listen to but his somewhat old school style and agressive street persona needs excellent beats to really shine through in my opinion. Not to say that he needs Premier to deliver quality material as there's plenty of stuff he has recorded in the last decade that's absolute heat but some of the producers he has worked with more recently just don't cut it for me. Anyway I'm truly glad that the Poet/Preem Co-Op worked as long as it actually did, providing us material to fill up two albums... and as I understand it they parted ways on remotely good terms so future colaborations is not an impossiblity.

For the first Lost Tapes compilation in 2016 I decided to bring together all the joints this power house duo cooked up outside of the 13 tracks found on "Tha Blaqprint". If you dug that album as much as me this little collection right here is nothing short of a blessing as there's plenty of material here that's just as good as the best shit on the aforementioned album. Some of these tracks was originally released on Poet's previous album "Rewind: Deja Screw", others appeared as B-sides to YRR 12" singles, and a few are guest apperances or remixes featuring Poet and Preemo. I hope you enjoy this one, but remember that you'll need to blast this shit LOUD AS FUCK to get the desired effect.

[DOCUMENTARY] TRAGEDY - "The Story Of Queensbridgde"

For my two first posts of 2015, as well as taking this time to wish all of my readers a terrific new year ahead of us all, you know I had to come with the big guns. First out is something that many of y'all have probably seen before although i know me myself has been looking for the full version of this for a long ass time, since the versions I constantly found always cut off after 68 minutes or something like that and had French subtitles. I'm talking about the excellent Brook Simms 2005 documentary on Tragedy Khadafi, who you should know by now is one of my all time favorites, "Tragedy: The Story of Queensbridge". YouTube user Hallvard Fauske Ekdahl has uploaded the, in my opinion, ever made on Queensbridge hip-hop as Tragedy pretty much inspired the major players of QB, from the Juice Crew, to Nas, to CNN, to Mobb Deep, to Cormega, Killa Sha, and so on. The narrative takes us through Trag's young days working as The Super Kids with DJ Hot Day, as the solo artist Intelligent Hoodlum, with the major underrated classics "Intelligent Hoodlum" and "Saga of a Hoodlum" under his belt, to his work with Capone-N-Noreaga creating "The War Report" and his long running solo career as Tragedy Khadafi, and much more. If you've never seen this before you are in for a REAL TREAT, a major shout out to Ekdahl again for the upload, and also be sure to support Trag's new street album "Pre-Magnum Opus" which is out now on iTunes. The video won't embed so head over to the playlist (which also includes two bonus footage), and has an all over running tme of about 85 minutes.

[Video] N.B.S. - "Seven"

N.B.S. is an up-and-coming underground act hailing from Boston and consisting of cousins E Flush and Vee Knuckles. I am not familiar with these guys before, but their single "Seven" is really sick, with ill verses set over some true school ish - a concept you really can't go wrong with when it's done right as here. Now the duo is releasing their new EP "Swizzvets" which features performances by KRS-One, Blaq Poet, Milk, Onyx's Sonny Seeza, I Bilal Firm and R. Muhammad. The two latter appears on the first heavy hitting single from "Swizzvets", with production from JakeBeatz. Watch out for these guys because this is DOPE! If you like what you hear, cop a copy of the album from iTunes for only $8.99. Stay tuned for more info and more music from these guys!

[Comp] PHD (The Poet & DJ Hot Day) - "Non Album Tracks"

Another slamming Lost Tapes compilation is here for the real hip-hop heads to enjoy! This is one I can't take credits for as it was compiled and uploaded by Debonair P, a very good producer in his own right, who here has collected all non-album tracks by the early-'90s Queensbridge duo known as PHD. For those who don't know PHD was an emcee/producer DJ made up of two real 'Bridge legends, the legendary DJ Hot Day and the too often, still to this day, overlooked rugged emcee these days known as Blaq Poet. The latter is still going pretty hot, releasing an almost classic album with DJ Premier on production back in 2009 called "Tha Blaqprint" and the stellar 2006 solo effort "Rewind: Defja Screw". Since then he has dropped several less stellar albums with producers like Stu Bangas and Vanderslice. On the other side of the spectrum, DJ Hot Day has slowly been coming back to the mainstream, at least as he was one of the mian producers of one of the standouts on Nas Jones' masterpiece "Life is Good" album - on "Reach Out" which featured Mary J. Blige and strived to really capture the block parties vibe in Queensbridge back when guys like these were coming up. He's also reunited a couple-three times times with Cormega on "The True Meanign" and "My Brother's Keeper".

Having released some hard but forgotten 12":s together with producer Norman Rockwell, and mix engineer all star Marley Marl, in the late '80s, it was first when Blaq (then known as just The Poet) hooked up with DJ Hot Day in early '91 that he truly started to come into being an artist that could his own. The same can be said for Hot Day as he had been Tragedy Khadafi's original DJ in The SuperKids before they disbanded around 1987, following Marley snapping up Tragedy for a solo deal, and later released an album called "It's My Turn" in 1989. Despite being a solid effort, it failed to capture the attention of  neither the hood or the suburbs - interesting trivia is that album featured the first ever apperance by Cormega on wax, as he appeared on the posse cut "Going Straight Up"). Slightly reminiscent of the saga of The Gravediggazs, Poet and Hot Day came together and formed PHD somewhat as a response to the way their musical careers had been handled by the corporations, resulting in they both having something to prove to listeners and to the industry as a whole. And the chemistry between the two is unuqestionably there throughout, although they were still honing their skills and getting better every time. The result was one album from the duo after being signed to Tuff City, the early hardcore QB shit not too dissimiliar to what Trag was doing with his Intelligent Hoodlum albums. People saying that Mobb Deep and Nas invented the QB sound we hear today need to get a reality check; all they did was add their own spin to it and take it to the next level but the seeds had been planted through several acts already. The 1991 album was called "Without Warning" and it's twelve tracks, entirely produced by Hot Day, still to this day stand as a testament on just how booming this LP was botj tjem amd now with the perspective of the past. If you haven't heard the album for before and isn't one of those hip-hop fans that can't listen to hip-hop made prior to 1994 this one comes highly recommended, if not for anything else, then at least you should be able to appecaite it's historical weight.

For this compilation Debonair P has collected all non-album tracks ever released by PHD (a.k.a. Poet and Hot Day) as a group, including instrumentals on the projects "B-side" so to speak, and it's of course an all around great listen. This was made possible since Tuff City continued releasing PHD tracks they had in their vaults on 12" singles and EP:s all the way into '96 - it's obvious that they owned the masters, but I wonder if they had the group's  content. Either way you don't want to miss it, so a huge thanks goes out to Debonair for this comp! If you haven't heard Debonair's music before I'm sure you'll be very thrilled by the recent EP he did with mid-'90s East Coast underground phenomenon Omniscence called "Sharp Objects". Well 'nuff talk for the time being, so be sure to download this ASAP, take a trip down memory lane in the Queensbridge section of Queens and of course... TURN IT UP!!!

[Comp] SCREWBALL - "Street Conflicts"

I always been a sucker for that true gangster street-edged, hardcore East Coast hip-hop and when the Queensbridge quartet known as Screwball came out with their 2000 debut "Y2K" i was simply in awe. Since the crew of Blaq Poet, Kyron, KL and Hostyle hardboiled debut album, which included such monsterous bangers as "F.A.Y.B.A.N.", "Who Shot Rudy?", "Attn. A&R Department", "On The Real", to name a few, the crew released the dope but definitely not up-to-par "Loyalty" LP in 2001 (which of course despite featured a shit load of bangers, it's after all Screwball we're talking about). This was followed by a slamming compilation called "Screwed Up" featuring some of the best works from both official LP:s as well as a few remixes, B-sides and previously unreleased cuts. Yet there are a bunch of Screwball and/or Screwball related material that didn't make any official album released under the group's name (including guest apperances, a few solo tracks by members and some real rare single releases under the Screwball name). Being that these QB OG's are amongst my favorite crews of all times a compilation of these tracks (which also includes a very few amount of cuts from "Screwed Up"). With 18 songs and about 70 minutes of pure QB hardcore hip-hop from these lyrical beats this compilation was really a no brainer, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

On an important side note - This one is dedicated to my main man as it's one of his favorite groups - happy birthday Big Rob! BOOO-HAAAA!!

[Album Stream] MARCO POLO - "PA2: Director's Cut"

Ooooooh shit, the time is finally hear! If you've been following this blog for at least two months you know that I've been superhyped about the release of Marco Polo's official follow up to his 2007 album "Port Authority"; even going as far as stating that this will without a doubt be among the very best albums of 2013. "PA2: Director's Cut" officially hits stores and retailers via Soulspazm Records this Tuesday but the label and artist have decided to let loose of a full stream of the LP a little early, and luckily I happened to sit at the computer just as they did so so I'm breaking my neck and shaking my head in disbelief to this boom bap monster full of ludicrous hard beats, a guest lists that probably haven't been matched since Pete's first "Soul Survivor" and a whole lot of cuts from turntable wizards such as Shylow, DJ Revolution, and DJ Romes. I'm only a few tracks in but I'm just as blowed away as I predicted I would be... Marco Polo is a name you can count on and has been for years, if he's in the credits you can Count on his placement being one of the best tracks on the LP (one of the most telling examples is the track he laced Torae with for the latter's "For The Record"; an album that also featured contributions by DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Diamond D, 9th Wonder, Large Professor, and Nottz).

Things kick off with "3 O'Clock" and from there it just keeps booming and banging in that hardcore hip-hop direction that only true heads can enjoy - your girlfriend might very well ask you to turn off that damn RACKET!! Litteraly, there's standout after standout, both beatwise and lyrical wise - which isn't really suprising considering it features a majority of my favorite spitters of all time. There's a lot of posse cuts here which are so welcome - hearing Tragedy Khadafi, OC, Inspectah Deck, and Large Professor is sort of a dream come true. The preceding joint featuring Nature, F.T., and Big Twinz is a real Winner too, matching the aggressive Queens style of the emcees with a somewhat more soulful beat... Don't get fooled though, nothing on hhere isn't straight balls to the walls hard as far as drum programming and overall style go. I also like how there's a lot of little crazy beat interludes coming in here and there, sometimes with talk over, sometimes not. On first listen I feel that this is by far Marco's strongest album yet; "Port Authority" was a terrific record with instant classics like OC's "Marquee", Large Pro's "The Radar", Roc Marcy's "Lay It Down", G Rap's "Hood Tales" and so forth. While pretty much all the individual tracks were brilliant, I thought as an album it didn't come all the way through as it sometimes felt more like a compilation than an album, due to a lack in coherrence betweeen the songs. That problem is nowehere to be found here; the skits, the typpe of beats, the sequencing, the guests (which include everybody from Last Emperor, La Coka Nostra, MC Eiht, Breezly Brewin, Malcolm Martin, the original Year Round family with Blaq Po, H. Stax & NYGz Panchi,, etc.), and the emphasis on the DJ makes this a truly exceptional journey into beats and rhymes as they should be done. Hip-hop at it's finest in other Word. And this is just on my first listen.... Can't fucking wait to get this on vinyl and make my neighbors hate me a little more! Stream the full album via OnSmash below, and order the CD from UGHH or iTunes if you're truly diitized. I'ma wait til' December 10 when the 3xLP vinyl drops (this set is like 80 minutes and I'm sure as hell ain't complaining).

[Out Now] BLAQ POET - "Blaq Death"

Blaq Poet is one of the hardest emcees out, and one who's Screwball records, "Deja Vu" and "Tha Blaqprint" I have played religiously throughout the years. But I gotta be honest, his albums post-Year Round Records has been quite dissapointing if you ask me. There were some certified bangers on his first collaboration with Stu Bangas & Vanderslice on "Blaq Poet Society", bibut the replay value was lacking, and the "E.B.K." CD - I'm not even gonna touch that one. It's not that Blaq Po still don't know how to bring the heat like he used to, but after an album fully produced by DJ Premier/Works of Mart (with Easy Mo Bee supplying a guest production), it's pretty damn hard to come back to that type of quality - just ask Jeru The Damaja.
Now he's back with another full-length however on Man Bites Dogs, which marks his second full collaboration with Brutal Music production team of Vanguard and Stu Bangas. From what I've heard so far this is the stronger album of the two based on the tracks we've heard so far - I don't want to jump the gun if it stays in this realm this could very well be Po's best release since 2007. We got a sequel to the impressive "Voices", and guest features from artists including Sadat X, Roc Marciano, Tragedy Khadafi, Chino XL, Vinnie Paz and more. You can order the album and peep the samples @ Amazon (seems to be digital only). Peep the tracklist and artwork:

Blaq Poet & Meyhem Lauren - "Hood Talk"

The Screwball front-man continues to bless us with that grimy shit as he's soon about to unleash a new remix EP entitled "QB Slasher". The EP features new versions of a gang of choice cuts from his latest album, "Blaq Poet Society", which was released earlier this year on Brutal Music. Besides four new remixes with cameos from Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, Reef Tha Lost Cause, Wais P and Blacastan, a brand new song called "Freezerz" featuring Big Noyd and Bloodsport is included. The remix of "Hood Talk" is definitely a vintage QB banger, and Poet and Meyhem sounds iLL together. September 6 is the date.

Blaq Poet / Roc Marcy / Wais P

The official Stu Bangas remix of Blaq Poet's "Bushmaster Music" from his recently released "Blaq Poet Society". This take on the single includes new verses by Poet, Roc Marciano and Wais P; especially Roc Marcy and Poet sounds incredible together. I gotta say that it's incredible to see Marciano's work ethic as he pops up on a new banger about every week, always spitting certified fire. I will most likely do another Roc Marciano compilation soon, following "Caviar: The Album".

Apperently this track is taken from a forthcoming remix EP of the "Blaq Poet Society" album, which will also be put out through Brick Records. Besides Roc Marciano and Wais P, the EP will include features from Big Noyd, Meyhem Lauren, Reef The Lost Cauze and Blacastan. Sounds dope!

VIDEOS: Pharoahe Monch / Blaq Poet

Pharoahe Monch's "Black Hand Side" featuring Styles P The Ghost most definitely deserved a video. For me it was one of the stand-out songs on an album ("W.A.R. - We Are Renegades") that has grewn insanely on me for each spin and will most likely be included very high on my list of 2011s finest LPs in December. There's hardly no denying that Pharoahe is one of the most technically gifted emcees that ever walked this earth and his subject matter is REAL, REAL, REAL. If you haven't picked up "W.A.R." yet, then what the hell are you waiting for? Order the CD or LP from UGHH.com. FIXED LINK TO THE VIDEO, MY MISTAKE YESTERDAY.

This is another fresh video from Blaq Poet that I just received a link to in the mail today. The song is "Mortuary Music" and is the first video from his collaboration with producers Vanderslice and Stu Bangas, "Blaq Poet Society". The song in question is produced by Eric Vanderslice and bangs pretty damn hard, don't you think? Poet's "Society" hits stores in CD format June 21, and if you like what you hear I suggest you pre-order a copy already (unless you're a militant vinylist that is).

New Blaq Poet single

The latest single from Queensbridge's rawest emcees "Blaq Poet Society". The song is produced by Vanderslice who together with Stu Bangas are the sole beatmakers of the album. Although I think it will be almost impossible to top DJ Premier's splendid work with Poet on his last offering, "Tha Blaqprint", I'm always looking forward from new heat from the Screwball MC. If you pre-order the CD via UGHH you get a free bonus disc with promotional material from Stu and Vanderslice's freshly started Brutal Music company.

The return of Blaq Poet

You gotta respect QB's Blaq Poet, being that he's a true underground veteran who participated in several heavy projects between 1986 and 2011; and the beast from Screwball is still hungry! Back in 2009 he was still signed with DJ Premier under Year Round Records and released "Tha Blaqprint" which proved Poet and Preem to be as deadly a combination as any in hip hop and were thereby able to deliver one of the best albums of the year. Despite leaving YRR the man keeps grinding, gathering up 13 original new tracks with production from "newcomers" Stu Bangas and Vanderslice. It's great to see vets like Poet and AG giving the younger generation of beatmakers a chance; much respect. Two promotional singles have been released for "Blaq Poet Society", just click the highlighted links in the tracklisting below to download. The album is scheduled to drop on June 21.
