[Album] AMIRI - "This is Part Time"

Though some may be suprised, strong, introspective emcee Amiri has released a total of four albums since 2010 (two solo endeavours, and two as part of his duo with producer Spectac). I have to admit that Amiri is a new name to me, but he's signing on impressive underground label HiPNOTT and especially the lead single "Broke"  really made me to take notice Amiri's HiPNOTT debut is called "This is Part Time" and creates a close-to-perfect soundbed for the emcee's clever wordplay. If you like me and love jazz and smooth '70's classics, this is one amazing album that needs to be given a chance by my readers. The full-length LP and is suprisingly entirely produced by the man himself; so not only is he a really talented spitter, but the same goes for his skills behind the boardsl.

Released yesterday, HiPNOTT and Amiri has put up the entire album for free streaming via their Bandcamp page where you can also show your support for the the digital album by donating an amount of your choosig. It is also available on CD copies via UGHH right now, hopefully we will se a vinyll release as this is bonkers!

[Mixtape] AMIRI - "Big Bands & Coctails Vol. 1"

Born and breed in South Carolina, producer Amiri grew up on the music of the real hip-hop pioneers like T La Rock, Kurtis Blow and Run DMC and has followed the game develope since then; and his wide range of influences from both hip-hop and other genres blended with his unique style has made him a force to be reckoned with on today's hip-hop scene. Thouth he started getting placements, mainly for remixes, in the mid- to late-'90s, it is more recently with his work with HiPNOTT Records that Amiri really has started to make a recognizable name for himself - his solo debut "The Recipe" and especially his work with emcee Spectac on the critically praised albums "Almost Famous" and this year's "Soul Beautiful".

Now the skilled producer is bringing out another fresh project for us heads to enjoy; a smooth 21 tracks instrumental project that showcases Amiri's love for the big band jazz era music of the 1930's (even giving beats titles like "Live @ The Cotton Club"); incorporating into the tracks both samples of those records and creating the same vibe in a hip-hop a fashion. It is a very interesting listen, and although my jazz interest mainly begins with the next era of jazz (the bebop records of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, etc.), I've always been a sucker for the juxtaposition of jazz samples and hip-hop beats - something that shows how closely the two genres are releated on a spiritual basis. So why I understand this isn't up everbody's ally, I strongly recommend giving it a chance... After all it's free of charge!

[EP] CAROLINA DIRTY - "New Girl in Town"

Hip-Hop has definitely always been a man's world, so it's always appreciated when a hardspitting woman come along and really bring that gutter shit. For Carolina Dirty's first EP "New Girl in Town" she takes the help of the powerful duo of Amir & Spectac (with Spectac providing two ill guest verses, and Amir producing five of the EP's six cuts). But don't be fooled into Think that Carolina hasn't payed her dues; originally honing her skill together with Illegal's Mr. Malik at a Young age. She kept struggling and came close to signing with Death Row together with Malik, and a potential deal with TLC's Left-Eye. The hard work has obviously paid off, and if you want to hear a beautiful voice spit sick lyrics over smooth but knocking beats. Thanks to KevinNottingham.

Spectac & Amiri - "Make it Mellow"

"Make it Mellow" is the latest single from emcee/producer duo Spectac & Amiri's "Soul Beautiful" album that dropped back in April. Amiri's mellow but thumping groove brings out inspiring vocals from Spectac that is as good an example as any of what you'll find on the LP. Already available on CD, digital and stream, word is that you'll soon be able to find "Soul Beautiful" on 12" LP so keep your eyes open.
