[EP] Sean Price / Illa Ghee - "Metal Detectors"

We've lost way too many rhyming legends the past couple of years and we see the reminders now and again. Luckily this time its at least a positive reminder, an unreleased EP that Sean Price worked on shortly before his death that let us remember how incredibly dope he ALWAYS was on any project. The man had an incredible work ethic, after his passing we quickly got "Impreius Rex" which shitted on most artists entire output and there are rumoured finished products with Lil' Fame and 4th Disciple, respectively. He also worked a lot with Illa Ghee during his last few years and they were actually working on put out an EP that they were more or less able to complete before Sean was taken from us. The project is called "Metal Detectors" and over 8 songs it features the duo going back and forth over sold production and guest spots and cameos from Michael Rapapaport, Royal Flush and Rim. [Comp] FREDDIE GIBBS - "Volume One: The Guest Spots"

Last week I saw Freddie Gibbs perform  a blazing 90 minutes set ar KB (Kulturbolaget), Malmö, Sweden. No hype-man, only a DJ at the back and his mic presence was nothing short of incredible. A true emcee if I ever saw one - with no bling and other stuff distracting from the music Gibbs gave his best performing in only jeans and a white Tee, and the setlist was absolutely terrific. The Gary gangster performed outsanding versions of some of his best tracks from "Pianta","ESGN", "Shadow Of A Doubt", "The Miseducation..." and some of his iller guest spots. Since I am, even in this day and age, an album guy, I didn't truly get into Gangsta Gibbs unti his modern day classic "Pinata" (2012) with Madlib. While Gibbs gruff voice and gangster mannerism and thuglife boasting isn't really nothing new, he does it with same conviction as 2Pac and legends of that stature and there's never a case in which you don't believe him. Then you enter his current muical partner Madlib which he did the entire "Pinata" album with and the marriage between 'Lib's sunny soulful, chopped up sample goodies has never been attacked by an emcee in such a manner before - making "Pianata" a truly original album that will be regarded as a classic a couple of years from now. 

The night included material from his early mixtapes, his mini-albms, his two real LP:s and then some, and through the years Gangsta Gibbs has popped up everywhere as an impeccable guest features on some hard hitting beats by the likes of Alchemist, Just Blaze, Statik Selektah, Madlib (including the cherished B-sides from the "Pinata" LP) and more. There's no denying that Gangsta Gibbs is one of the more interesting and original artist to emerge out of this decade, having released an album with Madlib that's about as dope as "Madvillain"was in 2004. Gibbs is also one of the rare breeds who's at home with a multitude of different styles - he can get busy over soulful, obscure sampe chops, banging West Coast bangers, NY bom bap type beats, Trap beats and then some. I can't think of any other artists who can handle that entire range of modern hip-hop with that kind of authority - another aspect that makes him one of the greatest doing ir right now. And this live concert was ample proof that Gibbs is not only a great studio artist but an all-around great artist, both on and off stage.

Following the combination of "Pianata" and this outstanding concerts there was no doubt i my mind that there was time for a Freddie Gibbs compilation here at The Lost  Tapes, something I've been meaning for a long time anyway. This 20 tracks compilation mainly focuses on Gibb's guest spots, a few B-sides and remixes from the Madlib sessions, as well as the single "Freddie Soprano" which is just too dope to sleep on. It's very likely you'll find a Volume 2 here @ The Tapes in a couple of week or so, but this is the real deal so turn out, tune in and DROP OUT.... and don't forget to TURN IT wUP!!

Some more Lost Tapes goodies for y'all... you know I'm crazy about D.I.T.C. so this is a great find right here. Since I first heard time Domingo on Fat Joe's excellent and highly overlooked sophomore album, "Jealous One's Envy" I've been checking for his name in credits! This take on the song is a mezmering version of what would appear on the album, sporting a progressive, yet dusty production that really goes well with Joe's ruff bars, though it will definitely take some listening before it really connects due to being used to the LP version. The track is lifted from Domingo's "Sessions & Lessons" album which is set to drop before the year's end. The compilation also features new music from Sean Price, Ruste Juxx amongst many others and can pre-ordered right here. Stay tuned and....... TURN IT UP!!

The song features Illa Ghee who has revealed that he and P completed the sessions for an album to be coming soon entitled "Metal Detectors". SEAN PRICE TRIBUTES

The news of the tragic passing of one of hip-hop's most charismatic artist's sudden passing last month left the hip-hop community in a shock. At least a small solace to his friends and dedicated fans is that the ubelivably talented spitter was preparing tons of material before his passing. It's strange but it's like a lot of people have a feeling that their time is coming up in many instances - just look at the huge amount of music artists like 2Pac and J Dilla recorded shortly before their passing which fans to some extent still live on to this day. It almost seemed like he had a premonition, I certainly believe in stuff like that, and hitted the studio hard his final year in his life. We got the recently released 8 tracks / 30 tracks version of his EP/mixtape "Songs in the Key Of The Price". I have only heard the iTunes EP version of it yet, and while it's nothing mindblowing lyrically it's classic Price over very stripped down beats with a real back-to-basics formula. 

But that just to whet the appetitze the fans because he also got a fully recorded album with Illa Ghee called "Metal Detectors" in the can that is soon to be released - you can check out the video for the duo's  he has a full-length made in collaboration with Fizzy Womack of M.O.P. - not sure whether or not it's a one produer/one MC type of deal or if they both are going in on the mic together (either way should be very dope), and then it is his final official solo album - the official folllow up to his excellent "Mic Tyson" - that's aiming for a late 2015 release and is entitled "Imperius Rex". Add to that Guilty, Black and Price had been recording for a new Random Axe LP and super underrated producer 4th Disciple just told  a story on how he and Sean Price hit up the studio together a few days before his passing. Price was supposed to drop a guest verse for an Inspectah Deck EP 4th and him were working on, but according to Price the chemistry between the two was so incredible that they recorded three full songs and scheduled another studio sesson for August 10 - two days after his tragic passing. The three songs they did, which might be Sean's very last recordings, are however scheduled to appear o a compilation ot be available this fall so be on the watchot for that.

Of course there will be a lot of tribute shows and DJ sets in honoring the man (as well as a lot of amazing wall tribute, big shout out to the graffiti artists). First out, up top, is the DJ Premier and DJ Eclipae tribute show on the Rap Is Outta Control show. Next up is the official Duck Down podcast from Statik Selektah's Show Off Radio. The set includes words on the man and his legacy from those close to him like Rock, Dru Ha, Ruste Juxx, Tek, Torae, 9th Wonder, and of course Preem and Eclipse. You are surely missed Ruck!

[EP Stream] SEAN PRICE - "Songs In the Key of Price"

I've been super busy with the blog interfering with my real life, and I know I promised a Sean Price compilation for y'all. Don't worry it's commin, and I will try to it ASAP. But Sean P has been a lot in my thoughts, what an incredible entertainer, emcee and overall dope person judging by what all his huge posse has to say him. At the time of his passing word is that he had several projects already in the can that he and Duck Down was planning to release over the next few months, including a Fizzy Womack complete album, a EP/mixtape called "Songs in the Key Of Price" that is supposed to be an appetizer for his real album. I haven't followed the hip-hop blogs or my e-mail very closely lately, but I was suprised to see that Duck Down released the full "Songs..:" about a week ago which at first flew right over my head.(the release that is, not the actual music once I heard it). The digital album is an EP featuring eight songs, while the mixtape/street album features an almost completely revamped album from what the physical which features eight songs rather than 30. Either way, whatever version this is some great shit and one of the last Sean Price projects we will ever hear were he had complete creative control.... so TURN IT UP!!!

Gangrene just put together a video in tribute to Sean Price and his apperance on the sickest song from the duo's latest banger "You Disgust Me". "Sheet Music" is a Heavy posse cut with a grinding funeral organ and pounding drums where Sean P, ALC, Oh No and Havoc go head to head. Video isn't anything to write home about but it's good that they getting this song more attention at this moment! SEAN P!!!!

Talented, young Brooklyn hip hop emcee Marvelous Mag is one of the first to bring out a proper Sean Price tribute song which is not all that strange considering that he is Sean P's younger cousins. SEAN PRICE - Rest in Peace

It's now been ten days since the shocking and trading news of one of the realest emcees to ever do it passed away in his sleep. This post and the upcoming compilation that hopefully will be up to night should have been up just a day after that tops, but I've had a lot of problems with my internet Connection with the internet Company shutting me off and Everything. But take my Word for this - from now on I will start to get back on track, with lots of ill compilations, focus on new Music from both underground legends and new up and comers, trying to get those Daily updates again. Since the news of Sean Price's unbelivable passing left me in a Daze, I've been blasting loads of incredible albums, guest spots and Music from BBC's finest. Rediscovering the greatness of his Three solo albums and his work with Heltah Skeltah. Either his passing came as a shock to him and his family or he was recording a lot of material since he knew his time was coming up. Why I say this is because apparantly P was racking up a lot of material to be released in 2015, starting out with a mixtape called "Songs in the Key Of P" which was supposed to drop this week to build up for his official fourth solo album, "Planet Apes". Now as if that wasn't enough he also has a full collaboration album recorded with the one and only Fizzy Womack a.k.a. Lil' Fame of M.O.P. From what I gather the album will be a mix of P solo tracks over Fizzy Wo beats and straight up mic collaborations.

 

One song each has been leaked from the solo mixtape and the solo album (with the title track from the latter being a PF Cuttin' banger) and are straight FIRE and can be heard above and below, respectively. Definitely stay tuned for more info on this Project and anything from the ones brokest rapper alive. And I'm also planning a Sean P compilation to drop today or tomorrow so be on the Watch out for that as well! But I want to pay my condolences to Another of hip hop's great fallen Soldiers - REST IN POWER P!

 

[Stream] GANGRENE - "You Disgust Me"

 Alchemist and Oh No is back together again for another serving of that nasty ass Gangrene shit. These two legendary producers and ocassional spitters really bring the heat on their third full length which they have given the fitting title "You Disgust Me". While Oh No is pretty cool on the mic, ALC is not very interesting but it really doesn't matter since the guys have a sick rapport with each other and it's all about the production and overall atmosphere on these Gangrene discs. Heavy on bass, distorted jazz samples, turntable attacks and vocal clips about floating feces, fans of "Gutter Water" and "Vodka & Ayahuasca" will definitely not be let down... Guest spitters include usual suspects like Fashawn, Your Old Droog, Action Bronson, Evidence, Havoc and Sean Price. "You Disgust Me" hit stores this coming Friday (order it @ UGHH), but already know you can stream the entire project below. TURN IT UP!

OOWOPTHEDON Ft. TRAGEDY & SEAN PRICE & KIMA - "Ink Pen"

I don't really know who OoWopTheDon and Kima Rocel are but a track with both Tragedy Khadafi and Sean Price obviously equals an automatic press play moment. The track is produced by Cooler Ruler Divine and features several recognizable cameos, including Royal Flush, FT and Joe Fatal. Will be interesting to see where this ends up.

DJ EFN is a DJ and producer originally hailing from Miami, originally known for his early '90s "Crazy Hood" mixtapes series, Now after over 20 years in the industry, learning the ropes, and building connections, EFN is stepping to the table with a retail album under his own name - entitled "Another Time". The album is oficially released today and is filled to the fucking limit with incredible guests from all coasts and different generations - or how about Scarface, Inspectah Deck, MC Eiht, Blu, Sean Price, Your Old Droog, M.O.P., Guilty Simpson, KAM, Fashawn, Cormega, Cory Gunz, Masta Ace, Killer Mike and many more. Sounds almost too crazy to be true right? While the majority of the production is handled by DJ EFN himself, DJ Premier, Hazardis Soundz, Davincci and Miami Heat Wave each contribute a track or two as well. Damn sick cover by Skam2? as well, everything about this project screams true ass hip hop if you ask me... DOMINGO Presents KRS-ONE / OMAR EPPS / SEAN P & RUSTE JUXX - A Taste of "Sessions N Lessons" LP

All of the great producers obviously have tons of incredible sessions that for one reason or never failed to make it into the public sphere. Many of these producers choose to hold on to them with white knuckles so to speak, which is unfortunate. In more recent years we have got to see some previously unknown music from legends like the D.I.T.C. brothers, Omniscence, Natural Elements, Mobb Deep and Masta Ace to name a handful. Domingo has often tried to make sure to put out previously unreleased gems to the people and we know that he's partaken in tons of sessions with some of the rap industries absolute top echelon. Good news then that on February 17 yet another compilation of this type of material is being unveiled in the form of "Sessions N Lessons". So far three singles have been released through Domingo's Soundcloud page. Up top you'll hear the previously unreleased KRS-One track "Look Into The Sky", recorded in 2001 for either "The Sneak Attack" (an album Domingo had a lot more to do with than the printed credits lets on) or "Spiritual Minded". Below you find embedded links to Omar Epps (then known as WolfPack's) 1995 jam "The Eyes Of God" and the knocking Sean Price / Ruste Juxx banger "All Time Great". The limited CD is now up for pre-order via IndieGoGo.com where it's revealed that other artists starring on the album includes Rakim, Channel Live, Kool G Rap and many more.

SEAN PRICE - "Land of the Crooks" [Divided Souls & DJ Pain Remix]

This super ill remix of Sean Price's recent "Land of the Crooks" single has been out for a while but in case anyone missed out on it, you definitely need to hit play up top. Featuring M.O.P.'s Billy Danze and Maffew Ragazino, this updated version was created by Divided Souls Entertainment and DJ Pain 1 for an upcoming compilation album for Coalmine Records. The album is called "Reminded" and will be available on January 20, you can pre-order it @ iTunes now. Also check out the Cookin' Soul remix of "Born Naturally" (Large Pro, Big Noyd and G Rap) below.

APOLLO BROWN / RAS KASS Ft. SEAN PRICE - "Impossible Dreams"

Apollo Brown and Ras Kass' recent collaborative project definitely featured some top-notch moments of raw hip-hop with a message (how heavy is that "Deliver us From Evil"?) and it turns out there was at least one stunning moment left on the cutting room floor. "Impossible Dreams" features the impeccable Sean Price who is a great fit for both Ras and Apollo's styles. 

RANDOM AXE - "Scum"

Random Axe's self-titled debut which was released a few years ago, was a really good album, though it took me some spins before it truly sank in. With the trio consisting of producer Black Milk, fellow ruff-voiced Detroit emcee and legendary Boot Camp Clik member turned solo emcee Sean Price.  Their LP "Random Axe" slowly started to grow on me, and since then all members of the trio has released some absolutely terrific solo projects on their own. Especially Black Milk has been getting stronger with each release, and his latest project "If There's A Hell Below", is shaing up real lovely based on the few street singlles and official singles we've heard so far. The album drops on October 28 and can be-preordered on CD or LP from UGHH.

For the final single before the album drops Milk leets loose of the highly anticipated reunion of the Random Axe crew. The song is called "Scum" and is another sure shot from the album. I for one can't wait for the full thing. Bang the track above!

DIABOLIC - "Game Time" (Ft. Sean Price & Vinnie Paz)

American artist Diabolic is preparing to release his sophomore album "Fightin Words" in just a month now. It's the Long Island emcee's second full-length album only, despite having been in the game for years, laying down guest verses fror big underground names such as Immortal Techniue ("Dance With The Devil" anyone?), Poison Pen, Awar, Vinnie Paz, Snowgoons, Sicknature, and many more. For his new allbum he has rounded up several high-profile producers and guest emcees and judging by the singles so far this should be HOT.

So far we've we've heard the DJ Premier laced opening song "Diabolic Sound", "Suffolk's Most Wanted" Ft. RA The Rugged Man and now he lets loose of anoother pure boom bap banger called "Gane Time". Beside a memorable performance by the main artist we also hear him trade bars with Sean Price and Vinnie Paz. Pump-pump-pump it up! Crummie Beats who produced this builds this on a sample that I know have somewhere in my crates but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is right now and it's really bugging me. Any help?
