The Story of The Crooklyn Dodgers

The monumental meeting between Masta Ace, Black Moon, Special Ed, A Tribe Called Quest and Spike Lee that resulted in "Crooklyn", a track that'll go down in history as one of the finest 12" singles of all time. The song was of course a one-shot deal, made for Spike Lee's beautiful film of the same name, but there's a lot more to the story that you may not know... Now Red Bull Music Academy, who's really been blessing hip-hop heads with fantastic music seminars over the last couple of years, have put together a brilliant interview based around the making and aftermath of the original "Crooklyn". Pretty much everyone who was involved with the joint except for Ali Shaheed Muhammad is interviewed; did you know that ODB was originally supposed to be on it?; did you know that the trio first recorded all completely different verses over the beat?; did you know that Evil Dee was involved in the production?; etc, etc. In other words, an absolute must read for any serious hip-hop connoisseur - CHECK IT OUT!

Apathy has released the third and possible final single from his new album, "Honkey Kong" with a video directed by "Open" Mike Eagle & Greg LaRose and all I can say is that both Apathy and Da Beatminerz (who produced this) absolutely went IN! The album is stacked with fat rhymes and beats provided by the likes of DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, Beatminerz, Evidence, Khrysis, Statik Selektah and cameos by everyone from Xzibit to General Steele and Ill Bill. Support a starving artist and pick it up @ UGHH.

I want to send this track out to my brother Johan Davidsson who I and many of his closest friends were led to believe had already passed on. This happened through misinformation randomly given by the fucking police, seemingly just to mess with peoples mind. He's in critical condition though and I hope and pray that you'll make it through my brother, I'm with you all the way!

Da Beatminerz - "Movin' On Ya Weak Production"

Da Beatminerz rank among the sharpest producers to dominate the underground scene back in the good ol' days of the '90s. They had a crew of dope emcees in the Boot Camp Clik who they gave a unique sound, resulting in the hardcore rap classics "Enta Da Stage" by Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun's "Da Shinin'", Heltah Skeltah's "Nocturnal" and O.G.C.'s "Da Storm". As soon as BCC started feeling like the stripped down rugged sounds of Evil Dee, Mr. Walt and Baby Paul were holding them back the quality of their projects declined for a good while. Meanwhile Da Beatminerz started getting a good rep as in-demand beatmakers for artists ranging from Rakim to Craig Mack. A whole bunch of incredible 12" singles came strapped with a Beatminerz remix and if that was the case you could count on it being superior to the A-side mix. Here I present a collection of some of my favorite productions from the Dewgarde producers (with the occasional help from underrated former Beatminer Baby Paul), released between 1995 and 1999 which in my opinion was their creative peak (although they still put out some heat every once in a while, you'll might catch a volume 2 of this focusing on their 2000-2011 productions). You won't find any tracks from the early Boot Camp Clik albums but as usual a mixture of remixes, unreleased cuts and outside production. TURN IT UP!!
